The communications pertained to
further complaints concerning bus service. A -group representing the motion picture
theatres, being present, as well as Mr. John T. Martin, president of the Northern Indian
Transit, Inc., City Attorney I. A. Hurwich proceeded to read the two communications
to the assemblage, referred by the Common Council. A spokesman representing Balaban &
Katz, and speaking also for the Avon Theatre, then proceeded to address the Board con-
cerning the hardship imposed upon the theatre patrons, due to lace of bus service after
11:30 P.M. A great amount of discussion followed, participated in by various persons
present, including Mr. Martin, who presented figures concerning the financial loss
suffered by the bus company on its various routes from the operation of bus routes
late at night from lack of patronage. One theatre operator stressed the fact that they
operate as a public service every day in the week, regardless of the fact that their
figures show certain days regularly fail to produce revenue to meet costs of operation,
and expressed the opinion that late hour bus service should be maintained as a public
service regardless of its failure to produce revenue sufficient to cover the cost of
the service thus rendered. Various suggestions were offered, and the existence of
similar conditions in other cities was cited by Mr. Martin. The Board then made the
suggestion that the Northern Indiana Transit, Inc. prepare a report to the Board on
the bus runs in operation after 11:00 P. M. daily, setting forth their reasons for
7
0
0
