<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, January 18, 19540
<br />at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read

<br />'Marines, asking that the dates of
<br />June llth and 12th be set up as Rose Day and
<br />grant
<br />their organization the privilege
<br />of soliciting funds, for the benefit of hospitalized
<br />Marine veterans, on the downtown
<br />streets and at factory gates on the two days
<br />specified.'
<br />There being no conflicting "tag day"
<br />authorized for this date, the Board granted
<br />the
<br />request.

<br />Next appeared, Mrs. Elizabeth Wappenstein, representing the Health Department,
<br />with the request that the Board proceed with the required legal advertising to obtain
<br />;bids to supply this department with a new automobile for which funds were appropriated
<br />.land are now available. The Board directed the Clerk to place the advertising with
<br />;;local newspapers within the current week.
<br />j The Board next examined a drawing of the proposed Matz First Addition, as pre-
<br />kPared by Homer W. Fisher, Engineer, and bearing the approval of the City Plan Commission.
<br />IThe Board approved the proposed addition as submitted.
<br />VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2766 - 1953
<br />This being the date set, hearing was held on the assessmentroll showing the award
<br />of damages and the assessment of benefits in the matter of vacation of a part of Sherman
<br />Avenue, under Vacation Resolution No. 2766.
<br />In the above named assessment roll, no remonstrators appeared and no written
<br />� remonstrances were filed, the Clerk of the Board submitted proofs of publication of
<br />'notices and same were found sufficient, and the Board, therefore, finds that the several
<br />;lots and parcels of land have been benefited and damaged in the amounts shown on said
<br />;roll. The Boardj therefore, decided to take final action on said assessment roll and
<br />;declares same in all things ratified, confirmed and approved without modification and
<br />the proceedings closed, and the portion of the street vacated upon receipt of the amount
<br />jof benefit assessments from the various property owners so benefited and all proceedings
<br />1had with reference to said street vacation are hereby sustained.
<br />The City Plan Commission recommended the vacation of alley in Baker and Mc Henry's
<br />Addition, ten feet in width and one hundred nineteen and ninety-five hundredths feet
<br />in length, commencing at the Southwest corner of Lot 52, and extending from Roberts
<br />Street in an Easterly direction, and this was referred to the Engineering Department
<br />for further investigation.
<br />The City Plan Commission recommended the vacation of the East and West alley
<br />between Lots Nos. 19 and 20 in Elias Rupel's Addition in the City of South Bend, Indiana
<br />and this was referred to the Engineering Department for further investigation.
<br />The City Plan Commission recommended the vacation of the East and Vest alley
<br />?!lying South of the first East and West alley South of Pleasant Street, between the
<br />il
<br />East line of Twenty -Fifth Street and the West line of the first North and South alley
<br />East of Twenty -Fifth Street and South of Pleasant Street, and this was referred to
<br />the Engineering Department for investigation and report.
<br />The vacation petition, submitted by Aristidi ,S.. Chacho and Sofi Chacho, under
<br />date of October 14, 1953, asking for the vacation of'a portion of an alley running
<br />North and South, which alley lies between St. Vincent Street, and the Northerly line
<br />of Lot No. 14, in Heierman's Addition to the City of South Bend, was not recommended
<br />jby the City Plan Commission.
<br />The Board next reviewed housing structures at 740-742 and 744-746 Western
<br />:Avenue. This application directed to the Building Commissioner for a waiver of require-
<br />? merits to bring up to code two (2) 2-family housing structures at 740-7 2 and 744-746
<br />!Western Avenue, xktcrN had been rejected on January 12, 1954, by the Building Commissione
<br />Mr. Rosenbaum, being present, stated that he is willing to purchase these housing units
<br />'from the Federal Government and maintain them for housing, providing he is not required
