<br />I A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, November 9, 1953,

<br />10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read
<br />and approved. Salary claims, in the total amount of $31,931.26, were approved. Claims
<br />of the following suppliers, in the amount of $24,151.05, were approved and ordered paid:'

<br />First appeared before the Board Mrs, Hallie Larimer, 313 S. 34th Street, Committee
<br />Chairman,,Mothers of World War II, requesting permission to conduct the organization's
<br />;!annual
<br />poinsettia sale on December 4th and 5th. There being no confliction with any.
<br />similar funds drive for those dates, the Board granted approval.

<br />Next appeared before the Board, a Mrs. Burnham, representing The Good Samaritan
<br />Army, Inc., of Chicago, asking permission for the public solicitation of alms on the
<br />streets and in the taverns of the downtown area. It was pointed out to Mrs. Burnham
<br />that the old established organizations, performing such solicitations are sufficient,
<br />and to avoid this activity getting "out of hand", the Board denied this request.
<br />A representative of the Salvation Army next appeared before the Board stating that
<br />he opposes any competitive alms solicitors, and was informed the request of The Good
<br />Samaritan Army for permission to engage in this activity has been denied.
<br />Then appeared before the Board, an applicant for taxicab driver's license. Inves-
<br />tigation having shown this applicant to have a criminal record, the Board rejected his
<br />application.
<br />A petition to vacate public utility easement between Lots Nos. 75 and 76, Edison
<br />Park Addition, and drawing illustrating this easement, bearing the approval of the City
<br />Plan Commission, was examined and approved by the Board.
<br />The petition of Ben Feferman Motor Sales Corporation, filed under date of July 14,
<br />1953, and bearing the report of the City Plan Commission, dated November 6, 1953, was
<br />next examined by the Board. The Board accepted and approved the report of the City
<br />Plan Commission, which report disapproves the vacating of a section of alley petitioned
<br />for by the above corporation.
<br />The petition of Sears, Roebuck and Company, together with Victor Freeman and
<br />Gilbert L. Schaus, filed under date of October 8, 1953, and bearing the report of the
<br />City Plan Commission, dated November 6, 1953, was next examined by the Board. The
<br />Board accepted and approved the report of the City Plan Commission, which report disap-
<br />proves.the vacating of the alley desired by the above named petitioners.
<br />The petition of James R. Rasmussen, by his attorneys, Jones, Obenchain and Butler,
<br />and drawing illustrating that part of Sherman Avenue opposite Lot 19, Wm. Millerts
<br />Addition, to be vacated, bearing the date of September 30, 1953, and the approval of
<br />the City Plan Commission, was next examined and referred to the Engineering Department
<br />for further investigation.
<br />Further action in the matter of Vacation Resolution No. 2764 was held in abeyance.
<br />Request for temporary walk and street occupancy, in connection with the construction
<br />'of the new Salvation Army Building, 516-518 So. Main Street, and blue prints illustrating'•
<br />same, were next examined and approved by the Board.

<br />R. S. Andrysiak, City Engineer, filed primary assessment roll showing the awards
<br />of damages and the assessments of benefits in the matter of vacation of THE ALLEY BETWEEN'
<br />'CAROLINE STREET AND ELDORA COURT FROM THE NORTH LINE OF DELBERT COURT TO THE SOUTH LINE
<br />'i3OF THE ALLEY NORTH OF DELBERT COURT under vacation resolution No.2765 - 1953• `
<br />In the above named assessment roll, the Board hereby orders that it will meet in
<br />jthe City Hall at 11:00 A. M. on the 6th day of December 1953, for the purpose of hearing
<br />and receiving remonstrances from all persons interested in or affected by said vacation,
<br />1,'and the Board further orders that notice of said hearing, together with the amount of
<br />;;damages awarded and benefits assessed beaddressed to the property owners by publishing
<br />same on the 13th day of November, on the 20th day of November and on the`30th day of
<br />iNovember, 1953, in the South Bend Tribune and the Tri-County News.
