Perkey, representing the Studebake
Corporation, seeking the Boardis permission for certain aspects in the featuring of the
premiere showing of the Studebaker Centennial films at the Granada Theatre, April 17, 18
and 19th. Such featuring is to include the use of searchlights and the displaying of
a Conestoga wagon and a 1953 "Hardtop" Studebaker; the displaying in the foyer of the
Granada of a Studebaker coupe, taking.all precautions relative possible fire hazard
connected herewith; and the possible day and night use of a captive balloon. The Board
granted permission for the use of these promotion features.
Next appeared before the Board a group comprised of the following ladies: Mrs.
Herbert Krueger, Mrs. Leon Thornton, Mrs. Donald Long, and Mrs. William Adelsperger.
The group presented a.petition, complaining of dust, dirt and stench from the asphalt
plant operations carried on by the Street Department at 714 N. Niles Avenue. Mr. Ray
Andrysiak pointed out that the Board is aware of the dust and fumes, and is at this
time arranging for the purchase of a dust collector and smoke arrester, upon the
installation of which this annoyance will be practically eliminated. Mr. Andrysiak
also pointed out that this area is zoned light industrial and consequently is a proper
site for an asphalt plant. H. M. Tomlinson, Street Commissioner, being present, stated
that the brief operation of the plant this morning, complained of by Mrs. Krueger, was
a demonstration conducted for a representative of a dust -collector manufacturer and
pointed out that this equipment is needed for the two -fold purpose of eliminating
complaint from the immediate residential area and to reduce loss of fumes and asphaltic
oils which it is desirable to retain in the asphalt end product. Mr. Tomlinson also
replied to a complaint from the group relative to the barking of the dogs at the Dog
Pound. The group, having apparently satisfied themselves that the Board is giving the
matter its best attention, offered some remarks commending the Street Department for
improved service in the matter of street repair and withdrew.
ENTRY OF PETITIONS PRESENTED
The Board of Public Works and Safety hereby receives and places on file the
Petition of Earl E.
