582, <br />A petition, dated March 18, 1953, for the improvement of north Illinois Street <br />from Linden Avenue to Washington Street, by the construction of a concrete pavement, <br />was examined and referred to the City Engineer for investigation and report. <br />STREET DEPARTMENT: <br />Street Commission H. M. Tomlinson, being present, took up with the Board the <br />possibility of a lower charge being made for the oiling and grading of dirt streets. <br />Mr. Tomlinson suggested charging 83 per square yard for applying asphaltic oil and • <br />grading, and W per square yard for this work where pea gravel treatment is added; <br />these prices to be in lieu of the price of 10�,and 15� per square yard presently in <br />effect. The Board approved this lowering of prices, as recommended. <br />.Mr. Tomlinson next brought to the attention of the Board, the plan of the Gas <br />Company to put in.a gas main on Calvert Street and pointed out that this operation will <br />completely ruin the existing oil surface. Chairman of the Board, R. S. Andrysiak, <br />Informed the Commissioner that in every instance of this kind, where the Gas Company <br />cuts into an oiled street or alley, the company is billed at the rate of $1.00 per <br />square yard for all street or alley surface thus damaged, which is sufficient for the <br />satisfactory replacement of this type of surface. <br />The Board next considered the application of the Northern Indiana Public Service <br />Company for permission to lay a 12" main in North Shore Drive, from Michigan Street to <br />Angela Boulevard. The Board instructed the City Engineer to investigate the possibility <br />of locating this line in any area other than the street. <br />A copy of Traffic. Engineer, E. H. Miller's letter to the chief engineer of the <br />New York Central Railroad pertaining to installation of flasher signals at Kendall, <br />Chapin and Catalpa Streets, was next read by the Board and ordered filed. <br />A request for permission to construct a canopy in connection with the rebuilding <br />of store front at 1125 Mishawaka, was approved by the Board and referred to the • <br />Building Commissioner. <br />The Board next took up the bids opened at the regular meeting of Monday, March loth <br />to supply nine desks for the Council Chamber. After some discussion, in which the <br />president of the Common Council, Walter C. Erler, took part, it was decided to accept <br />the bid of the Office Supply & Equipment Company, for the Yawman & Erbe desks #6450-01 <br />at $89.75 each, as the best bid for desks most suitable to the douncilis needs. <br />TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: <br />Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, was present and placed before the Board his <br />report in connection with the parking situation in the 100 block West Bronson Street. <br />Engineer Miller was commended upon his report and it is believedthe enforcement of <br />the 2-hour parking regulation in effect for this block by the closer police surveillance <br />promised by Chief Gillen, will correct the condition to the satisfaction of Br?. Frank <br />Parkhurst, who reported the gross violation of this regulation over a period of months. <br />The Traffic Departmentis need for three two-way three -section Underground Feed <br />Signals was brought to the attention of the Board, and the Clerk was directed to <br />purchase the required equipment. <br />Advice of parking lot price changes to be made, effective April lst, were <br />examined and ordered placed on file. These changes were submitted by Green Arrow <br />Parking, Inc., and apply to their parking lots at the following locations: <br />216 West Colfax Avenue <br />119 West LaSalle Avenue <br />315 N. Michigan Street. <br />Contractors Bonds, each in the sum of $1,000.00, were examined and approved, for <br />the following contractors: <br />Leonard H. Herriman <br />James F. Keller <br />Ralph Keller, Jr. <br />W. W. Construction Co. • <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned <br />at 11:15 A.
