557 <br />The proposal of D. D. Smelser Co., Inc. to supply washed sand, #12 gravel and <br />washed rice gravel, and the bids of Kuert Concrete, Inc., Lincolnway West Gravel Co., <br />Reed Construction Company, Rieth-Riley Construction Company, South Bend Sand and <br />Gravel Corporation, Western Indiana Gravel Company, American Steel Supply Corporation, <br />and the Mid -Continent Chemical Co., Inc. were held in further abeyance pending addi- <br />tional study. <br />The Board then gave consideration to the request of the Public Library to install <br />• a drop -box for books at the southeast;co.rner of the building in which the Industrial <br />Branch is located, on the north and south alley. The matter was discussed by the.Board <br />and permission for the installation was granted. <br />STREET DEPARTMENT: <br />Harry M. Tomlinson, Street Commissioner, was present and took up with the Board <br />the'matter of the paid vacations for Street Department employees. Some discussion <br />ensued and decision reached by the Board to handle vacations in this department for <br />the year 1953 on a"staggered}' basis. <br />The application of Don C. Hunter for Taxicab Driverts License was rejected by the <br />Board' and the Clerk was directed to so notify the applicant, informing him of his right <br />Ito have a hearing at the next regular meeting of the Board. <br />The affidavit for Taxicab License of Marshall Holycross, dated December 20, 1952, <br />wasrnext examined by the Board, same having previously been examined, investigated, <br />and approved by the Chief of Police, and received the Board's approval. The Board set <br />the'date of February 9th for a public hearing in the matter, and directed the Clerk <br />to advertise said hearing as required by statute. <br />i ' The Board next read a letter from Representative Jesse L. Dickinson, regarding <br />the blocking of important street intersections by railroad switching operations, and <br />after some discussion it was agreed to refer the letter to Traffic Engineer, E. H. <br />� Miller, asking that the Traffic Engineer make a report to the Board as quickly as <br />possible in regard to this matter. <br />The Board then examined quotations received from Roseland Decorators, Verhostra <br />Painting Company and The Modern Decorating Company for washing walls and ceilings of <br />main and upstairs lobbies of the City Hall, and various offices. The Board took all <br />three bids under advisement pending clarification of the Verhostra Painting Companyts <br />proposal. <br />TRAFFIC DEPARTIV;ENT: <br />Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, asked the Board for their approval to prohibit <br />parking on the south side of LaSalle Avenue, between LaFayette Boulevard, and a point <br />75 feet east of Main Street Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday <br />from 9 a.m. to 6 p. m. Approval was granted. <br />The Board next examined the Maintenance Bond supplied by Place and Co., Inc., and <br />the Ghio Casualty Insurance Co., Hamilton, Ohio, as surety, in the sum of $3,000.00. <br />Bond was found to be sufficient and in order, and was approved by the Board. <br />An Excavation Bond in the sum of $1,000.00, binding Edmund L. Zimmerman, was <br />examined and approved by the Board. <br />Summary of Building Permits issued in the year of 1952 was examined and ordered <br />filed. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned <br />at 12:00 noon. <br />L� <br />Attest: 4u-, <br />Clerk <br />0 <br />
