536 December 10, 1952 The deferred regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held December 10, 1952 at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of $23,911.16 were approved. Graves Auto Glass 77.63 Meyerts Hardware Co. 48.30 H. M. Tomlinson (Petty Cash) 22.70 The Board first considered sewer plans for Huron Street from Lombardy. Drive to alley west of Gladstone Avenue and for Huron Circle, and approved.the plans as sub- 40 mitted. George Bernath, representing the St. Joseph County Food Dealers Association, and attorney Joseph Ettl appeared before the Board, calling attention to the Transient Merchants Ordinance, the license fee of $25.00 and penalties involved for violation, and asked that the ordinance be rigidly enforced against transient christmas tree vendors. The Board instructed the Chief of Police to proceed to enforce the ordinance. STREET DEPARTMENT: Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, being present, the Board called his atten- tion to dangerous small holes at the entrance to and in the alley between the First Federal Savings and Loan Building and the Fidelity Investment Building on Main Street, and requested that sand and asphalt repairs be effected immediately. The Street Commissioner brought to the attention of the Board his departments need for new street sweepers and one new truck,and pointed out the probable slow - delivery on the street sweepers and consequent urgency of obtaining bids, and pur- chasing this equipment at an early date. Some discussion was given to the possibility of leasing this type of equipment,with option to buy at depreciated value at a later date. Mr. Tomlinson mentioned that this method is used by the city of Joliet in connection with garbage trucks. Mr. Tomlinson submitted specifications for the type of sweepers the department requires. Specifications were examined and the Board directs the Clerk to proceed with the legal advertising, bids to be opened at regular meeting . of the Board, January 5, 1953, at the hour of 11:00 A. M. Daniel Radmanovich, next appeared making inquiry concerning the Board's decision in the matter of bus patrons benches supplied as an advertising device. Mr. Radmanovi was advised by the Board that this plan had been rejected inasmuch as it would add a constant secondary responsibility the Board.does not want to assume. The Plat of Part 1 of Section 7 Belleville Unit "B", bearing the approval of the City Plan Commission was next examined by the Board and approved. VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2743 - 1952 This being the date set, hearing was had on the resolution heretofore adopted by • the Board of Public Works and Safety for the vacation of the alley north of Oakwood Boulevard from Berkley Place to the west line of the north and south alley and from the east line of the north and south alley east to Inglewood Place, under Vacation . Resolution No. 2743• The Clerk of the Board having shown sufficient proofs of publication and no remonstrators having appeared and no written remonstrances having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the said resolution be finally adopted and the said alley be vacated. The Engineering Department is directed to prepare an assessment roll covering the assessment of benefits and the award of damage's to the surrounding properties. •
