- <br />501; <br />A petition bearing eight -six signatures, demanding immediate action to alleviate t <br />dust condition on Orange Street caused by the South Shore electric trains use of the <br />street from College to Olive Street, was examined by the Board. Street Commissioner <br />H. M. Tomlinson, being present, stated that the railway has offered to "put up dollar <br />for dollar" the sum subscribed for whatever type of oil the residents desire to have <br />applied on -this street. The Board referred the petition to the Street Commissioner for <br />investigation, and report is to be made at the next"regular meeting. <br />• I The name of Davis Street, suggested by members of the Oliver family for the street <br />provided by special Warranty Deed, covering tract of land specifically dedicated for <br />public street purposes and heretofore accepted by the Board, was approved by the Board. <br />The Board next read: <br />A motion made by Councilman Korpal in the August 25th meeting of the Common Council <br />i calling upon the Board to take action in the matter of Armour & Company blocking <br />pedestrian traffic by parking trucks on the sidewalk in front of their place of business <br />The Board read the notice of this motion, submitted by the City Clerk, Mayme DuMont, and <br />j referred the matter to the City Engineer for investigation and report. <br />! TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: <br />I <br />Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, being present, the Board took up with him the <br />matter of a Drive -In court for Ridge Company on Franklin Street, now required owing to <br />the new one-way traffic on Jefferson Boulevard. A drawing of the proposed court was <br />examined and the matter received considerable discussion. The Board granted permission <br />for curb construction only, as indicated on the job drawing by N. Roy Shambleau, dated <br />i ! 9-9-52. <br />A petition from residents in the 900, 1000 and 1100 blocks of Diamond Avenue, <br />! reporting the use of this street as a truck by-pass in violation of ordinance, and <br />requesting posting of the needed trucks Prohibited"signs. The Board was informed <br />by the Traffic Engineer that the required signs have been placed on Diamond Avenue, <br />within the past two weeks, remedying this situation. <br />i <br />A complaint registered with the Common Council and referred to the Board by the <br />Council concerning the need of repair work on the Pennsylvania Railroad crossing on <br />Garst Street was next taken up with the Traffic Engineer, who was directed to contact <br />the railroad officials and follow thru in the matter of early repair of this crossing. <br />I The problem of sidewalk -parking of automobiles along the Colfax Avenue side of <br />the Poledor Building, which has persisted for years, was brought up for discussion next, <br />and in view of this street being a State Highway, and Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, <br />being present, the Board directed him to contact the Highway Commission officials of <br />this area relative to this problem, and report to the Hoard the result of their con- <br />ference in the matter. <br />-A letter from Indiana Cab Company asking permission for a Two -Cab Stand on Main <br />j Street at the Oliver Hotel was read and taken under advisement by the Board. <br />.The matter of the temporary assignment of a taxi stand on Chapin Street to George <br />1 F. Ashcraft was taken up the Traffic Engineer, who advised the Board that this location <br />had formerly been the cab stand of Indiana Cab, now maintaining a cab stand on the <br />opposite side of the street, and strenuous opposition to maintaining a taxi stand at <br />this,location had brought about the relocating of the Indiana Cabs stand. In view of <br />this information, the Board rescinds the temporary establishing of Ashcraftts cab stand <br />j at this location and the Clerk was directed to so inform Mr. Ashcraft, asking him to <br />. advise the Board of another choice of locations, and a permanent cab stand for Ashcraft <br />Taxi Service will then be approved by the Board. <br />ji -The Board approved the installation of traffic signals at the intersections of <br />Mishawaka Avenue and 26th Street and Twyckenham Drive and Calvert Street. <br />.The installing of STOP SIGNS at the following locations were approved by the <br />Board: <br />On <br />Corby at Twyckenham <br />On Humboldt Street <br />at O'Brien <br />On <br />Harris Street at Huron <br />On Klinger Street <br />at Addison <br />On <br />Catalpa Street at Calvert <br />On Rush Street at <br />Dayton <br />• On <br />On <br />College Street at Fassnacht <br />Dubail Avenue Taylor <br />On Ewing Avenue.at <br />the intersection <br />Fellows (this makes. <br />at <br />a <br />4-way stop) <br />The matter of <br />a.1951 bill for medical service <br />rendered Devite <br />Nelund by Memorial <br />I Hospital, was taken up by the Board and the Board <br />ruled that inasmuch as the hospital <br />had failed to file <br />claim and/or encumber 1951 <br />municipal funds, the <br />Board is unable to <br />' <br />pay this item. <br />,A suggestion made by Councilman Hahn for sidewalk drop box for Laundrette in the <br />200 block East Jefferson Boulevard was considered by the Board and taken under advise- <br />ment,. It was pointed out that requests of a similar nature have been repeatedly denied <br />by the Board. <br />• Contractors Bonds, each in the amount of $1,,000.00,were examined and approved <br />5 by the Board as follows: <br />
