<br />Mr. Edward C. Rase, a Government Housing representative, calling attention to rank
<br />growth of weed in both the Southmoor and Beacon Heights housing projects, appeared
<br />before the Board and -asked that the Board.direct the Street Department to cut these
<br />weeds. The matter was immediately taken up with the Street Commissioner, in the presence
<br />of Mr. Kase, and it was agreed the weeds should be cut at the same cost to the housing
<br />projects as would be charged to the ordinary citizen and property -owner.
<br />!i Mr. George F. Asheraft appeared before the Board, stating that he is engaged in the (!
<br />itrucking business, and desires also to enter the taxicab business with one cab, center-
<br />Iing his cab activities in the Chapin Street area. Mr. Asheraf is request was carefully I;
<br />• jconsidered and approved and he was directed to have his meter checked by the City Sealer.

<br />Two actions of the Common Council in the last regular meeting of July 28th, both
<br />pertaining to the removal of trucking terminals from residential areas, were read. It
<br />was conceded that the only terminal so located is that of the South Bend Freight Lines,
<br />Inc., and the Board has been assured by this freight line that a new terminal under
<br />construction for them on Olive Street will be completed within the next several weeks,
<br />and immediately upon its completion, this freight line will move from its present
<br />location in Hoose Court.
<br />Motion made by Councilman Muezynski at the last regular meeting of the Common Council
<br />. IJuly 28th, and carried, in regard to the New York Central Railroad being notified to
<br />repair their crossings at Walnut, Harris, Sample and Olive Streets, and Twyckenham Drive,
<br />was next considered and the Board directed that Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, contact
<br />the proper railroad official and furnish a report in this matter at the next regular
<br />meeting of the Board.
<br />A petition received by the Common Council and referred by the Council to the Board
<br />!of Public Works, pertaining to a smoke nuisance created by the steam engine, used by
<br />the South Bend Sand and Gravel Company, was examined by the Board and referred to the
<br />City Engineer for investigation and report.
<br />• i A petition for the prevention of further dumping on the south bank of the river,
<br />;immediately west of the Ironwood Drive bridge, carrying fifteen signatures, was next
<br />!examined by the Board and referred to the City Engineer for investigation and report.

<br />A petition addressed to the Board of Public Works and Safety, dated August 4, 19522
<br />. - lover the signature of Roland Obenchain, attorney for Portage Realty Corporation, was
<br />referred to the City Plan Commission.
<br />. ISTREET DEPARTMENT: Harry M. Tomlinson, Street Commissioner, was present, and called to
<br />the attention of the Board, the need of a rebuild job on the South Kaley Street sewer.
<br />Funds being available to handle the rebuilding of this sewer, the Board authorized the
<br />City Engineer to make a check of the requirements and proceed to advertise for bids.
