M <br />Mr. Miller informed the Board that 6000 lumen lights had been installed on Olive <br />Street, South of Fisher Street; Sample Street, East of Olive Street; and on Sample Street <br />at the New York Central Railroad, a part of the cost of which is to be paid by the New <br />York Central Railroad, The Grand Trunk Western Railroad, and the city to illumina#a the <br />grade crossings at Olive and Sample Streets. <br />The following letter was written to the State Highway Commission: <br />Mr. 'Samuel C. Hadden, Chairman <br />State Highway Commission of Indiana <br />State House Annex <br />Indianapolis, Indiana <br />Dear Mr. Hadden: <br />Referring to our letter of February 27, 1951 in regard to one-way streets; we wish <br />to state that the city of South Bend is agreeable to the proposed changes in re-routing <br />of State and Federal traffic as discussed and agreed,upon tentatively by your Director <br />of Traffic, Norman Schafer and our Traffic Engineer, ErrB st H. Miller, at a meeting in <br />Indianapolis, Friday, April 20. 1951. <br />We understand that State and Federal traffic as a result of this meeting will be re- <br />routed as follows: <br />U.S. 20 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette Boulevard will be reroute <br />east on LaSalle to Main Street, south on Main Street to Colfax Avenue and then east on <br />Colfax Avenue. <br />State Route 23 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette Boulevard will be <br />jre-routed south on Michigan Street to Western Avenue then west on 1.%'estern Avenue followin <br />'present established routes. <br />State Route 2 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette will be re-routed <br />straight east on Western Avenue to Michigan Street, south on Michigan Street to Monroe <br />Street, then east Mtn Monroe Street following present established routes. <br />The one block of Main Street where U.S. 20 traffic will be re-routed is included <br />in a contract let by the City of South Bend a few weeks ago for resurfacing Main Street <br />between LaSalle Avenue and Western Avenue. ,r'lork on this street is scheduled to start ar <br />the 23rd of May. <br />Very truly yours, <br />cc: Mr. Earl B. Baer <br />BOARD OF PUBLIC VVERKS & SAFETY <br />ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractor's Bonds were approved and ordered filed for Walter <br />Skiles; Charles R. Bowen, Sr.; Gafill Oil Company; Charles Osterhold; Charles Snyder;, <br />and Desire Versl ype of Mishawaka. <br />The Board approved plans for the improvement of Carroll Street from Chippewa to Sher <br />wood Avenue. <br />A petition was received asking for the vacation of the alley west of Michigan Street <br />and est of Main Street from the north line of Navarre Street to the south line of the <br />first alley north of Navarre Street in Bartletts lst Addition. This was referred to the <br />City Plan Commission. <br />Permission was granted to Ham the Wrecker to occupy the north and south alley at <br />the, rear of 119-121-123 North Michigan Street, while the building is being razed: <br />STREET DEPARTMENT: Melton 0. Brannan, Street Commissioner, was present and matters per- <br />taining to his Department were discussed. <br />CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pertaining to <br />his Department were discussed. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned <br />at ,11: a.m. <br />ATTEST: <br />CJ <br />• <br />• <br />0 <br />0 <br />
