Miller, Traffic Engineer presented reports on two petitions objec
to bus routes, as follows:
Board of Public Works
City of South Bend
South Bend, Indiana
Gentlemen:
and Safety
Re: Petition requesting that
the Miami bus be prohibited
from traveling on Irvington
Avenue between Erskine and Miami
Streets.
May 12, 1950
In an effort to give better bus service in the area bounded by Fellow Street, Ewing
:venue, Miami Street and Donmoyer Avenue, the end loop of the Miami Street bus line was
extended or projected more to the center of this polulated area.
Being able to extend bus routes is one of the may advantages in bus mass transportati
service. Unfortunately these busses have to travel on city streets. In selecting the
streets for bus routes and extensions, the area is surveyed with two primary objectives
in mind: 1. Service to be rendered and 2. Safety of motorists and pedestrians along
the route.
Irvington Avenue was selected for the return route because it is the same width as
• other parallel streets and is exactly mid -way between Ewing and Donmoyer. The route was
extended west to Erskine for the same reason as this street is approximately mid -way bet
ween Miami and Fellows.
Since I.find no decided disadvantage in the streets selected in this extension over
other possible "streets in the area, I would recommend that no change in the routing of
I the Miami bus line be made at this time.
Very truly yours,
i
Signed: Ernest H. Miller
Traffic Engineer
