<br />The Board of Public Works held a regular meeting on Monday, May 24, 1948 at 8:30
<br />A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved,
<br />Salary claims in the amount of $16,184-53 were approved and ordered paid. Claims of ti

<br />TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Mr. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters per-
<br />taining to his department were discussed.
<br />A petition was received asking for the installation of a traffic signal at the
<br />intersection of Lincoln Way West and Taylor Street. This being a state Highway,'the
<br />matter was referred to Mr. Miller, who will inform the State Highway Commission of the
<br />petition.
<br />The Board approved the installation of the following stop signs: On Grace Street
<br />at Meade Street, both sides; on Huron Street at Meade Street, both sides; on Monroe
<br />Street at Meade Street, both sides.
<br />GARBAGE DEPARTMENT: A petition was received from EcInerny and Huguenhard, representing
<br />the Liberty Disposal Company, asking for additional compensation for garbage collection
<br />and disposal because of the City's increase in area. No action was taken.
<br />ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractor's bonds were approved and ordered filed for Eugene
<br />W. Louderbatk and Freeman Construction Company.
<br />An Excavation bond in the amount of $2,000,00 was approved and ordered filed for
<br />�. A. Currie.
<br />The Board gave permission for boy scouts to paint house numbers on the curbs and
<br />approach walks, provided that the scouts carry credentials and approach the property
<br />owner and get permission before before so doing.
<br />The Board approved plans submitted by Carr and Wright, Inc., of Chicago, Illinois
<br />for the footings for the Sears, Roebuck Building. The Architects were informed that
<br />the canopies as designed would be governed by the City Building Code which states that
<br />canopies cannot be extended more than eight feet from the building, or half the width
<br />of the sidewalk, whichever is less.
<br />Plans for grading, paving, sidewalk and curb in Pinhook Manor were approved by the
<br />Board, subject to their approval by the City Engineer.'
<br />The following men: Frank Kominowski, Bert P.iagiera,'John Kolocz, Ben Tyrezyznski,
<br />Joseph Pawlowski, Sylvester Kaminski, Ben Otolski and Bert Mii.nczewski representing the
<br />Central Civic Improvement Committee came before the Board to discuss the possibility of 1
<br />widening Western Avenue. The Board directed the City Engineer to contact the State
<br />Highway Commission and arrange a meeting with the above committee to discuss said project.
<br />VACATION RESOLUTION No. 2563
<br />RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA: That it
<br />is desirable to vacate the following:
<br />The first alley North of Elwood Avenue from Illinois Street to Chicago Street
<br />And
<br />The first alley North of Lincoln Way West from Chicago Street to Sheridan Avenue.
<br />The following property may be injuriously or beneficially effected by such vacation
<br />Lots numbered 1 to 4 inclusive and lots numbered 18 to 25 inclusive and lots numbe
<br />ed 1+2 to 44 inclusive in Lincoln Plaza Addition.
<br />Notice of this resolution shall be published on the 28th day of May and on the 4th'i,
<br />day of June, 1948 in the South Bend Daily Tribune and the Weekly Mirror.
<br />This Board, at its office in the City Hall on the 14th day of June. 1948 at 11:00
<br />A.M. will hear and receive remonstrances from all persons interested in or affected by
<br />these proceedings.
