<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, January 12,
<br />1948 at 9:30 AoM, All members were present. Minutes of the last meeting were read
<br />and approved. Salary claims in the amount of $12,639,86 were approved and ordered
<br />paid. There were no claims of suppliers to be approved,
<br />TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Mr, Ernest Millers Traffic Engineer, was present and matters per
<br />taining to his department were discussed,, 11
<br />Mr. Miller informed the Board that there was a need for stop signs at Broadway
<br />on Carroll Street and on Webster Street at Ford Street, The Board approved these
<br />signs and authorized Mr. Miller to install them,
<br />Mr. Miller asked permission to attend a meeting at Purdue University on January
<br />210 1946, at which he was invited to lecture before a Traffic Engineer class.. The
<br />Board granted him permission,
<br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT: Mr, Schermerhorn of the Building Department was granted a ninety
<br />day leave of.absence effective January 15, 1948.
<br />BUS LINES: Mr, James Powell, representing the River Ridge and Boulevard Park Addition,
<br />came before the Board and presented a petition asking for bus service on Sherman Avenu •
<br />to Rose "Street, to Kessler Boulevard, and to Portage Avenue, This petition was sent
<br />to tlTe NorVhern Indiana Transit Company for their consideration, j
<br />ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: A Contractor's bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was approved
<br />and ordered filed for John C. Gillstrap,
<br />Excavation bonds in the amount of $1,000.00 each were approved and ordered
<br />filed for Norman W, Collmer, Joseph M. Hiznay, Harry Nicodemus and William L. Turnock.
<br />Vacation Resolution No, 2560
<br />This being the date set, hearing was had on the resolution heretofore adopted I
<br />by the Board of Public Works for the vacation of the alley South of Western Avenue
<br />from LaFayette Boulevard to the East line of the alley Wiest of LaFayette Boulevard, i
<br />ALSO the alley West of LaFayette Boulevard from '.Western Avenue to -the North line of
<br />the alley South of Western Avenue under Vacation Resolution No. 2560. The Clerk of
<br />the Board having shown sufficient proofs of publication and no remonstrators having a-
<br />ppeared and no written remonstrances having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved,
<br />seconded and unanimously carried that the said resolution be finally adopted and the
<br />said alleys be vacated.
<br />Mr. Ray Z, Andrysiak, City Engineer, filed primary assessment roll showing the
<br />award of damages and the assessment of benefits in the matter of the vacation of the
<br />alley South of Western Avenue from LaFayette Boulevard to the East line of the alley I; •
<br />West of LaFayette Boulevard, ALSO the _alle y tallest of LaFayette Boulevard from. Western �1
<br />Avenue to the North line of the alley South of ;(Western avenue; under Vacation Resol-
<br />ution No, 2560,

<br />In the above named assessment roll, the Board hereby orders that it will meet in
<br />the City Hall at 11:00 A.M. on the 2nd day of February, 1948 for the purpose of hear-
<br />ing and receiving remonstrances from all persons interested ih or affected by said
<br />vacation. The Board further orders that notiee of said hearing, together with the
<br />amount of -damages awarded and benefits assessed be addressed to the property owners
<br />by publishing same on the 16th day of January and on the 23rd day of January, 1948
<br />in the South Bend Daily Tribune and the Weekly Mirror, , '
<br />The Indiana & Michigan Electric Co:�pany petitioned for permission to install I •
<br />additional underground conduits on Wayne Street between Michigan Street and LaFayette
<br />Boulevard and 9,lso they requested permission to reconstruct existing manholes as shown
<br />on their drawing #D-34766. The Board, upon the recommendation of the City Engineer II
<br />and the Electrical Superintendents, approved these petitions. Ii
<br />STREET DEPARTMENT: Mr, Milton Brannon, Street Commissioner, was present and matters
<br />pertaining to his department were discussed.
<br />Mr. Brannon informed the Board that two Model A. Tractors ordered�'Xrom the I ndian�
<br />Equipment Company in 1946 had never been delivered, and a representive of the Company
<br />who was present at the meeting indicated that the Model A Tractor had not been built i •
<br />for more than two years and was not going into production again, but that his Company
<br />was now building a Super Model A. which is a heavier model and more suited to the need
<br />of the 'Street Department. These tractors can be delivered at less than $200.00 addi-
<br />t-ional, and the Board, there -ore, ordered that two Super Model A tractors be delivered)
<br />Mr. Peter Guyga, a street department employee, came before the Board to discuss
<br />an injury to his hand suffered while in the course of his employment on the street
<br />department in 1944, The Board informed Mr. Guyga that they would take care of any
<br />medical expense in connection with the injury.
