The State Code is more liberal in its requirements for thickness of
masonry walls for buildings in the Fire District. Their specification follows the Under-
Iwriters' Standards for one, two, three or four hour fire resistance.
'Tentative plans for the apartment houses for the South Bend Housing Authority i P P y
'the Maggies Court Area are prepared according to the requirements of the State Code. These
plans contemplate three-story fireporrof structures with eight inch walls for the second
' and third stories, where our code calls for not less than twelve inch walls.
. As the Underwriters Laboratories classify eight inches of brick masonry as a
four -hour -fire-resistant wall, and the State Code requires one- to four -hour -fire-resis-
tant walls for buildings in the Fire Districts, according to mire exposure, I feel that
we will be justified in permitting these eight -inch walls on condition that they be made
of brick throughout and are provided with cross -walls at approximately twenty -foot inter
• vals.
Very truly yours,
(s) D. Moomaw, Building Commissioner
TRAFFIC ENGINEER: Mr. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertainin
Ito his department were discussed.
Mr. Miller informed the Board that several rooms were available to rent in the
Chrisman Building and the Clerk of the Board was directed to contact the rental agent
Hof the Building for details_.
ENGINEERING DEPAR` 1`ENT: An excavation bond in the amount of 01,000.00 was approved for
the Indiana Bell Telephone Company, and was ordered filed.
Mr. Klausmeier and Mr. Pruden of the Studebaker Corporation came before the Board
Ito ask permission for building a one story building on their property for storage pur-
I1poses. This building is to be built from salvaged material, and would not meet all
(requirements of the building code, but inasmuch as it is to be eliminated as soon as the
11 stored materials are disposed of, the Board approved the plans for same.
11STREET DEPARTIMENT: Mr. Anthony Zmudzinski, Street Commissioner, was present and matters
1per'tAining to his department were discussed.
1 CEMETERY DEPARTVIENT: Mr. Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pertaining
H to his department Vvere discussed.
