Board of Public Works and Safety, i South -Bend, Indiana IGentlemen: The requirements of the new .State Building Code vary considerably from those 1 of our local code. The State Code is more liberal in its requirements for thickness of masonry walls for buildings in the Fire District. 'Their specification follows the Under • ':writers' Standards for one, two, three or four hour fire resistance. Tentative plans for the apartment houses for the South i3end Housing Authority i the Maggies Court Area are prepared according to the requirements of the State Code. Thele plans contemplate three-story fireporrof structures with eight inch walls for the second , and third stories, where our code calls for not less than twelve inch walls. !� As the Underwriters Laboratories classify eight inches of brick masonry as a (four -hour -fire-resistant wall, and the State Code requires one- to four -hour -fire-resis- tant walls for 'buildings in the Fire Districts, according to fire exposure, I feel that we will be justified in permitting these eight -inch walls on condition that they be made i�of brick throughout and are provided with cross -walls at approximately twenty -foot inter- • I vats. Mr. miller informed the Board that several rooms were available to rent in the Chrisman Building and the Clerk of the hoard was directed to contact the rental agent of the Building for details. ENGINEERING DEPA:i111ENT: An excavation bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was approved for the Indiana Bell Telephone Company, and was ordered filed. i Mr. Klausmeier and Mr. Pruden of the Studebaker Corporation came before the Board to ask permission for building a one story building on their property for storage pur- 1poses.This building is to be built from salvaged material, and would not meet all requirements of the building code, but inasmuch as it is to be eliminated as soon as the stored materials are disposed of, the Board approved the plans for same.
