169 • • • r1 �J • Contractor's bonds in the amount of $1,000.00 were approved for C. A. Jordan Compan and Axel B. Tholander were approved and ordered filed. The Board sets up the following schedule for procedure before it at regular meetings subject to change from time to time as experience indicates that the business of the Board could be more efficiently operated in another manner. The following department heads shall appear before the Board for discussion of the problems of their department-s each Monday at the time set forth below: 9:15 Traffic Department 9:30 Electric Department 9:45 Street Department 10;15 Fire Department 10:45 Police Department Each department head is expected to be on hand fifteen minutes before the time set forth in the foregoing schedule. All bills, public hearings, opening of bids and other business of the Board will be taken up after 11:00 o'clock. This order becomes effective on the: 21st day of August, 1944. The Clerk of the Board is directed to notify each of the department heads by letter.. There being no further business to at 11:00 A.M. ATT Clerk come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned T, ETING - AUGUST 21, 1944 A regular meeting of the Board of Public 'Works was held on Monday,, August 21, 1944 at 9:00 A.M. Mr. Longfield was absent. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. There were no bills to be approved. TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Mr. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertain- ing to his department were discussed. ELECTRIC DEPART11KE11T: Mr. William Qualls, Superintendent, was present and matters per- taining to his.department were discussed. !� STREET DEPARTMENT e Mr. Anthony Zmudzinski, Street Commissioner, was present and matters pertaining to his department were discussed. lot: I.ENGINEERIN G DEPARTMENT.* Contractor's bonds in the amount of $1,000.00 were approved for.Charles E. En.mons,.Sherman L. Lechlitner and Mabel H. Babcock. These were ordered filed. GARBAGE DEPARTMENT: Upon motion duly made and seconded, the following resolution was I unanimously adopted: ( Mr. Longfield Absent) That the bid of Blue Lines, Inc. for collect o of garbage in the city of South Bend for the calander year 1945, be and the same is hereby accepted. The Board received a memorandum from the !Mayor stating that several complaints had been received expecially ffom servicemen that they had been refused taxi cab service to certain sections of the city. The following letter was sent to all taxi cab companies and to the Union Representative of the taxi drivers: jI "Complaints have been received from servicemen and other persons including citizens and residents of South ;3ebd, that they are being refused service from taxi cabs to and jfrom certain sections of the City. Your attention is called to the fact that this is a violation of the ordinance per- mitting cabs to operate and the regulation to operate within the City of South Bend. Henceforth such complaints will result in the ir=ediate prosecution for maximum -� p penalties under the ordinance. j� This letter is being called to the attention of each Cab Company and to the Union iRepres,;entative of taxi drivers so that both the companies and the drivers will be noti- ffied that such action will take place.
