<br />She stated, The reason we make such a big
<br />deal of this is that you've got your banners, you've gotten accolades, a pep rally from the
<br />community —this goes into the record here, going forward, in the City of South Bend. We have
<br />records that go back one - hundred and fifty (15 0) years. You will be in our South Bend records
<br />for this Common Council well into the future. Your recognition is well - deserved, and we want to
<br />make a big deal in celebrating you on behalf of the community, and that's what we are going to
<br />do right now. Thank you all for coming tonight. Thank you, parents, for all your support
<br />throughout this season, but in particular for having them come tonight. This is a big deal, so
<br />thank you. Councilmember Broden then read aloud the resolution for the Council and the public.
<br />Sydney Smallbone, Head Varsity Coach of the St. Joseph High School Indians, stated, I just
<br />want to say how proud I am of the season that we had this year. e fought through a lot of
<br />adversity, as you usually do in a season, but these girls really Can Le together toward the end. To
<br />go seven -and -oh (7 -0) in post- season play is not an easy thing to io. We had to go through some
<br />ranked opponents to get there. So, I'm very proud of them sticking together and fighting through
<br />some things and coming out on top. i
<br />Those from the public wishing to speak in favor of this bill:
<br />Samuel Brown, 222 East Navarre Street, South Bend, IN, stated 1, o the members of the St. Joseph
<br />High School Indians that they had accomplished something very unique, and that they could not
<br />yet understand the scope of this accomplishment at present. Mr. Brown stated that their pictures
<br />would be hung up in their school, and that eventually their children would see those pictures. He
<br />recounted a humorous anecdote of when his grandchild, in disbe 'ef, got to see Mr. Brown's
<br />picture in his school. He concluded by congratulating the ladies.
<br />Susan Richter, 1715 Hass Drive, South Bend, IN, stated that she remembers watching Ms.
<br />Smallbone play and win in 2005. Ms. Richter continued, To wat�� this coach and then watch this
<br />team win it in 2017 is a special memory that I'll have for the rest of my life, and I certainly agree
<br />with the gentleman: this is an honor that you will have for the rest of your life. On behalf of St.
<br />Joseph High School, I just want to say congratulations on a job ell done, and we are so proud
<br />of our Lady Indians.
<br />None from the public wished to speak in opposition to this bill.
<br />Councilmember Regina Williams- Preston stated, I just want to s y congratulations. You have
<br />accomplished an amazing feat and you deserve everything.
<br />Councilmember Randy Kelly stated, I'm the father of an eleven 1) year -old daughter who
<br />loves the game of basketball, so I want to thank you all so much or being such incredible role
<br />models for her academically, athletically, and in every way. Thai you all so much.
<br />Congratulations.
<br />Councilmember Oliver Davis stated, I like what your coaches have done. They have set the
<br />example. Not only have they won, but then they taught you how to win. So, that's your challenge
<br />now: you have won, now you've got to go out, later on in life, and teach some other young lady
<br />how to win, too. That would be my encouragement to you, tonight.
<br />Councilmember John Voorde stated, St. Joe Class of '62! It was a long time ago —there was no
<br />three (3) point shot, back then. Probably why I only scored two (2) points in my entire career.
<br />Anyway, congratulations. It's a major achievement, and all thos�atulations. comments about being good
<br />role models are certainly true and to the point. Once again, cong Keep up the good
<br />work. I
<br />Councilmember Gavin Ferlic stated, Congratulations. State ch ionship is unbelievable.
<br />Councilmember Karen White stated, Again, congratulations. We are so proud of each and every
<br />one (1) of you. Your principal, your coaches, your managers, and —most importantly —your
<br />parents who have supported you to this point. Not only have you made yourselves proud, but
<br />you've made the City of South Bend proud, as well. Good luck, and we expect to see you back
<br />here next year. j
