The city assumes that CSA approval of <br />this application will constitute approval for the acquisition of <br />delineated items with a unit cost in excess of $200. <br />D. COMMUNITY LOCATION <br />The City of South Bend, Indiana is located in the extreme north central <br />portion of the State of Indiana. The city is 6 miles south of the Michigan <br />State line and 90 miles east of Chicago. <br />South Bend covers 31 square miles and has a population totaling 125,580. <br />Black Americans comprise 17,739 (14 %) of the population and those having <br />Spanish surnames total 1,267 (1%). <br />Many South Bend residents are descendants of middle European immigrants. <br />Persons of Polish, Greek, Hungarian, Belgian, Irish and German ancestry <br />make South Bend both diverse and rich in ethnic groups. <br />Economically disadvantaged persons reside throughout the city. Many, <br />however, are clustered in the city's inner core. <br />
