July 31, 1961 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, July 31, <br />1961 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes of the last <br />regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered <br />paid to the various suppliers. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT (SUB -STANDARD DIVISION HEARINGS) <br />Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building <br />Department and advises the Board that notices had been sent to the Department <br />of Pgblic Welfare and also the National Bank of Mishawaka as Trustee of the <br />Augusta Walker Estate with reference to the property located at 523 N. <br />St. Joseph Street. <br />Appearing as lien holder for the property was Mr. Toll of the St. Joseph <br />County Department of Public Welfare and his attorney, Donald Patrick. <br />It appearing to the Board that this building has not been brought up to <br />standard, the Building Department is directed to advertise for bids for the <br />demolition of this property. <br />Comes now Mr. and Mrs. Belie with reference to property located at.1619 <br />S. Arnold Street, to show cause why orders from the Sub -Standard Division <br />of the Building Department had not been carried out. <br />After hearing Mr. and Mrs. Belie, it was understood that the structures <br />have been dismantled and that the property will be cleaned up by August 14. <br />It was the suggestion of the Board that the property be inspected by <br />August 11 and report made concerning conditions of the premises. <br />With reference to property located at 1219 Grace Street, although the <br />Department has been given permission to demolish the structure and advertise <br />for bids for this purpose, since the owner has contacted the Sub -Standard <br />Division concerning this property, permission has been granted to postpone <br />said demolition for the time being. <br />A progress report on property located at 2509 Longley indicates that little <br />work has been done to bring this property up to standard. <br />Mr. Grabarz was directed to advertise for bids for demolition after notifying <br />owner via letter -sent registered mail of this intention. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT REPORT (BLENKE BROS. REALTY COMPANY, INC (QUICK WASH LAUNDRY) <br />Comes now Verner Lane, Building Department Commissioner, and reports that <br />a recent investigation revealed that Blenke Bros. Realty Company, Inc. had <br />installed a large dry well on their property at 4033 S. Michigan Street and <br />that daid dry well continually overflows and that the excavation for the dry <br />well has never been back -filled. <br />Mr. Lane informed the Board that this condition exists as a detriment to <br />the health and safety of the general public and it was his recommendation <br />that the Quick Wash Laundry which is the establishment located at the above <br />address and which is responsible for the above conditions should be immediately <br />closed and remain closed until such time as the city sewer system shall have <br />been installed. <br />After due deliberation, it was the decision of the Board that the recommendation <br />of Mr. Lane be followed and the 'Quick Wash Laundry be ordered closed immediately. <br />Also that the excavation in the vicinity be immediately filled. <br />_CIVIL DEFENSE MiANES <br />Minutes of a meetingof the C}vil Defense Advisory Council held on July 12, <br />1961 were accepted y the Board and ordered placed on file. <br />
