That on said date the said Gerald McGinn violated Article XIVD Section <br />15-a, of the rules and regulations of the South Bend Fire Department by being <br />absent without leave. <br />Dated: June 24, 1960 <br />BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS & SAFETY <br />By: Irving J. Smith, President <br />Comes now Gerald McGinn and to the charges of violation of the Rules and <br />Regulations of the South Bend Fire Department, Article XIV, Section 6, and <br />Article XIV, Section 15-a, to each of said charges the said Gerald McGinn <br />pleads guilty to violation of said Articles, through his attorney, William <br />Roemer. <br />Comes now William Roemer and speaks on behalf of his client, Gerald McGinn, <br />pointing out that the record of Gerald McGinn to this date and to his <br />knowledge has been exemplary, this being the first instance to being absent <br />without leave. Comes also Fireman's McGinn's superior officer, Lieutenant <br />Haag and confirms that Gerald McGinn's record for being on time up to this <br />It, particular violation has been proper. <br />The Board, after having heard attorney William Roemer and Lientenant Haag <br />now takes the matter under advisement. A copy of a letter addressed to <br />Gerald McGinn dated June 249 1960 and signed by Irving J. Smith, President <br />of the Board of _Safety and a copy of the Charges for Violation were ordered <br />placed on file. <br />Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner,and Kenneth Jacob, representing Shell Oil <br />Company, appear before the Board to request permission for said Shell Oil <br />Company to place a sign on public property near the sidewalk at a Shell Service <br />Station located on the corner of Michigan and Navarre Streets. The Building <br />Commissioner finds no fault in granting this request. The Board thus grants <br />permission, subject to the following: 1. That said sign would not be an <br />encumbrance to the traffic signals or prove hazardous to public safety, and <br />2. that the Shell Oil Company take out insurance indemnifying the City of <br />South Bend for injury to person or property damage as follows: $1009000 injury <br />per person, $300,000 total accident and $25,000 property damage. The Board <br />directs the Traffic Engineer to check the abov a premises and report his <br />recommendation to the Board at the next regular meeting. <br />In connection with a request of Mr. D.D. Gross concerning the control of <br />truck traffic in Columbus Court, between Wyman's Department Store and Milady <br />Shop, Mr. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, was directed to check this c0art <br />and report his findings to the Board at the next regular meeting. <br />Comes how Bert Cichowicz of the Department of Weights and Measures and submits <br />a monthly report for June, 1960 which is the final monthly report of the 1959-60 <br />fiscal year. Submitted also, as required by law, is the Annual Report, from <br />July 19 1959 to Jude 30, 19609 which consists primarily of the number of <br />various types of weight and measure devices tested and inspected. Said <br />reports were examined, accepted and placed on file. <br />Officer James E. Robison of the South Bend Police Department requests leave <br />from duty from July 9, 1960 until the 24th day of July, 1960 for annual summer <br />training with the 27th AAM TC USAP of South Bend. Request granted. <br />PROPOSAL FOR PUBLIC LIGHUNG <br />A Resolution adopting the Plans and Specifications with reference to lighting <br />streets, alleys, boulevards and public places in the City of South Bend was <br />presented to the Board, since the contract of July 1, 1949 is terminated <br />and it is necessary to enter into a new contract to take steps for the lighting <br />of streets, alleys, boulevards and public places. <br />The Board on this day did adopt such Resolution and placed on file in the office <br />of said Board Plans andSpecifications for lighting with electricity streets, <br />alleys, boulevards and public alleys. <br />
