Long -range Plans (continued)
EDUCATION & PUBLIC PROGRAMS
Thematic tours need to be developed in cooperation with the local school systems
which reflects or expands the school's curriculum utilizing the resources of Discovery
Hall. A Curator of Education should be added to the staff to implement development
of these specialized tours.
A series of special programs, open to the adult public, should be developed
based on the museum's research and collecting interests. This program, developed by
the curatorial staff and director, could be supported by a special grant.
The museum's Newsletter should be expanded to include more fully developed
articles. This will probably require expanding the Newsletter from 4 -6 pages to
10 pages.
ARf HT1 /FC
The Studebaker Archives should be properly stored and cataloged. An NHPRC
Grant application is currently in preparation for this. Since the Curator of Collection
will have expanded duties regarding the Archives, a Curator of Education is needed to
relieve that part of Curator duties.
Archival collections should be expanded and a collections policy regarding
archives developed. In general Discovery Hall is interested in records, photographs,
or papers from any industry presently or once located in South Bend /Mishawaka, Indiana
and union locals representing those workers.
These long range plans directly address the institutional goals and community
responsibilities of Discovery Hall. They acknowledge the limited growth of resources,
but also reflect the need of the museum to continue to acquire new materials and
plan new programs in order to serve visitors, families, students and scholars.
22
