Asone of the
four parts necessary to the success of Century Center (the others are Performing
Arts, Art Museum, Conventions and Meetings) Discovery Hall must achieve success
and strong community support. Discovery Hall Museum's long range Program Plans
fall into four areas: Collections, Exhibits, Education and Public Programs and
Archives.
rni I r"rTTnNC
The present collections still reflect the dominance of the Studebaker Historic
Vehicle Collection as Discovery Hall's first major gift. The museum's collections
should be developed in several areas: Adding products and materials representative
of small and home industries, particularly those owned by minorities (cigar companies,
patent medicine): items which reflect the life of the worker off the job but related
to it (company athletic and social club items, labor union materials); expand col-
lections of the 19th century products ( furniture, plows, etc.).
EXHIBITS
With the completion of the museum's permanent exhibits, a large part of the
exhibit space will be utilized for the next 7 to 10 years. However, research should
continue to correct content errors or bring facts up -to -date. A schedule of temporary
exhibits, planned by the staff, sponsored by other community groups, or rented from
traveling exhibition services should be developed. Planning should always be kept
in mind for the eventual replacement of the permanent exhibits in whole or part.
(May be continued on following page) 21
