206 <br />August 5, 1963 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, <br />August 5, 1963 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes <br />of the last regular meeting and the special meeting were read and <br />approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various <br />suppliers. <br />RAILROAD CROSSING GUARDS: NEW YORK CENTRAL & GRAND TRUNK WESTERN <br />Comes now Mr. Frank Kaiser, Osceola, Indiana and Charles Sudlow, <br />515 Fairmount, Mishawaka, Indiana and submits to the Board a <br />communication addressed to the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way <br />Employees wherein the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Company and the <br />New York Central Railroad Company contemplate abolishing certain <br />railroad crossing guards as of August 7, 1963. <br />Mr. Kaiser and Mr. Sudlow asked the City to investigate in the <br />interest of public safety. <br />Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, was requested to investigate and <br />submit a report. <br />A letter was drafted to Mr. H. A. Sanders, Vice -President & <br />General Manager of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Company and <br />Mr. C. L. Statder, Assistant General Manager -Employee Relations, <br />New York Central Railroad Company, copy to be sent to Mr. C. S <br />Buck, Assistant General Chairman, Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way <br />Employees stating that the Board objects to the removal of watchmen <br />at the Olive and Sample Street crossings because this would add to <br />hazards at that high vehicular volume location which is the scene <br />of many accidents between motor vehicles and trains. <br />Mr. Hazinski was in full agreement with this action of the Board. <br />TRAFFIC ENGINEER:_ TRAFFIC SIGNS <br />Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the following <br />installations were approved: <br />3 - No Parking signs in alley at rear of 1337 Joyce Street, next <br />to Pinhook Lagoon. <br />2 Hour time limit sign installed to cover 1533 Lincolnway;'West <br />Stop Signs installed on Ruskin Street, both sides, at Roberts St. <br />Reversed Stop Signs at Dubail & Magnolia, signs installed on <br />Dubail instead of Magnolia. <br />Stop Sign -put_ on Pokagon, both sides, at St. Joseph St. <br />Stop Signs installed on Foster Street,'both sides, at Pokagon <br />Stop Signs installed on St. Joseph Street, both sides, at Peashway. <br />Stop Signs installed on Peashway, both sides, at Foster St. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT SUB -STANDARD DIVISION 1 <br />Comes now Joseph Ettl, attorney, representing property owners of <br />property located at 715 S. Meade Street. The Board was informed <br />that a demolition order had been issued but that the house can be <br />renovated. The owner, Mr. Blad, has had,:illtess in the family and <br />since he is a farmer, he requested, through his attorney, an extension <br />of six months in order to allow him to harvest his crops. The house <br />is now vacant. <br />After hearing all who wished to be heard, it was the decision of the <br />Board to allow a continuance until February 1, 1963.
