5 May 29, 1967 The regular meeting of the Boaad of Public Works and Safety was called to order at 10:00 A. M. with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST FOR RETIREMENT - OFFICER PODELL Chief McNaughton appeared before the Board and vubmitted the retirement request of Officer Richard J. Podell. The Board took the following action: Police Officer Podell having this date presented to the Board of Public Works and Safety his request for retirement for the South Bend Police Department for the reason he will have completed active service on June 2, 1967 and the Chief of Police, Tom McNaughton approved said retirement, same is unanimously approved by the Board of Public Works and Safety and it is ordered that Officer Podell of the South Bend Police Department is retired effective June 3, 1967. POLICE DEPARTMENT - RECOIuIlAENDATION FOR EXTENSION OF SICK LEAVE Chief McNaughton appeared before the Board and submitted a request for an extension of sick leave for William Adelsperger and Robert Werntz for a period QO of three weeks. The request was granted. COMMUNICATION FRCU DONALD E. MYERS - PRIVATE AMBULANCE SERVICE A communication was received from Donald E. Myers regarding a Private Ambulance Service add their desire to connect with the Fire Department radio department. A copy of this letter was given to the Fire Chief for his study and recommendation regarding this service. PETITION FOR STREET LIGHT - 800 BLOCK S0, KENTUCKY STREET A petition was submitted by several residents for a street light to be installed in the 800 Block of South Kentucky Street. The petition was referred to the Engineer's office. NEW SIGNS ON 100 BLOCK SOUTH LAFA YETTE STREET Mr. Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, has requested that the following be added to the record: NO PARKING, NO STOPPING 6AM to 9 AM, and 3 PM to 6 PM Monday thru Friday signs at 100 Block South Lafayette St. STREET LIGHT AT CLERMONT AND DORWOOD AHPROVED Mr. Clem Hazinski, Director of Traffic Engineering, gave the following report on a street light at Clermont and Dorwood. Investigation was made and night time observatii indicates a need for such installation. The two adjoining intersections of Dorwood and Rosemary and also Dorwood and Ironwood are illuminated. Installation of a 4000 lumen O.H. street light at the northeast corner of Dorwood and Clermond is recommended. The cost to the city would be $3.15 per month. The Board approved. STREET LIGHT AT CARROLL AND ELDER STREETS Mr. Clem Hazinski, Director of Traffic Engineering, gave the following report on a street light at Carroll and Elder and it was approved by the Board. Investigation was made and it was found that each intersecting street in this vicinity is illuminated, and because of the offset intersections these lights are 150 feet apart. The intereection of Carroll and Elder is not illuminated and as a consequence there is 300 feet between street lights which is ordinarily adequate. however, because of the dense foliage and type of neighborhood, it is recommended that a 4000 lumen O.H. light be installed, thus coppleting the pattern of a street light at each "t" intersection. Cost to the City would be $3.15 per month.
