April 5, 1965 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, Aprl <br />5, 1965 at 10:00 A.M. All members irrere present. Minutes of the last <br />regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and <br />ordered paid to the various suppliers. <br />APP ,ES • POLICE DEPAR ENT MARKMT1, STR ZEti'dSKi <br />BUKOVVSKI <br />Messrs. Joseph Markovich, Richard R. Strozewski, Charles R. Mahank and <br />Ralph L. Bukowski having made applicat-.on to the Board of Public Works <br />Safety for appointment to the South Bend Police Department and these <br />applicants having passed all necessal-j.mental and physical examinations <br />and having, been accepted by the Pension Board and having been recommended <br />by the Police Chief; said men are hereby appointed to the Police Depart- <br />ment, effective April 5, 1965. <br />SPECIAL PO IC CCH.11ISSION ELLI <br />A Special Police Commission for Dennis J. Elli, employed by the American <br />District Telegraph Co., Inc., was approved, pending receipt of Bond. <br />SPECIAL POLICE BONDS <br />Special Police Bonds for Allen E. Kester, Radio and Television Distributing <br />Co., and Bud McGee, employed by Walter W. BECKER JR <br />John Merland Becker, Jr., having heretofore filed his application with <br />the Board of Public Safety for appointment on the South Bend Fire <br />Department and he having been heretofore approved by the Board of Public <br />Safety on the 10th day of August, 19641 subject to approval of his <br />physical condition by the physician examiner for the South Bend Fire <br />Department Pension Board and the Chief of the Fire Department having <br />this date informed the Board that the applicant has passed such physical <br />examinations on March 31, 1965, John Mlerland Becker, Jr. is hereby <br />appointed to the Fire Department, effective April 1, 1965. <br />REPORTS, PHYSICAL CONDITION OF FIREMEN VAN WIELE AND CUNNINGHP11 ( FIRE <br />CHIEF <br />Fire Chief McHenry submitted written reports to the Board concerning <br />the physical e andition of Lt. Oscar Van Wiele and Fireman John E. <br />Cunningham. Both of these men are ill and both are still under the care <br />of physicnans. The 30 day sick leave allowed per year has also expired. <br />Chief i.1cHenry requested a ruling on the disposition of these cases. <br />After reviewing the -reports, the Board directed that the following <br />memorandum be sent to the Fire Chief: <br />Botch of the above -named firemen having exhausted their sick leave <br />and being incapacitated for duty on the South Bend Fire <br />Department, you have no choice other than to remove them <br />from the payroll and either recommend that their physical <br />examinations show them as disabled or carry them ex officio <br />until such time as they are able to perform their duties on <br />the Fire Department. <br />1 <br />-I <br />
