<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 5:40
<br />A.M., with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were
<br />reviewed and approved.
<br />BIDS OPENED FOR STREET SWEEPERS
<br />i
<br />This being the date set for receiving bids for two Diesel powered street
<br />sweepers for the Street Department, the Clerk tenderedproofs of publication in
<br />the South Bend Tribune and the Tri County News on December 19 and December
<br />26, 1969, which were found to be proper. [
<br />The only bid received was from Ries Equipment Co., Inc., 280 4 N. Catherwood
<br />Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, which was opened. Non; collusion affidavit
<br />was found to be proper. The bid was accompanied by abid undertaking in
<br />the amount of $1700.00. Bid being:
<br />Two Elgin Street Sweepers, with International"
<br />Harvester UD282 Diesel engine, with trade-in------$33,280.00
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the bid was referred to
<br />e--I the Street Commissioner for review and recommendation to the Board.

<br />REQUEST TO ATTEND FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION MEETING, EVANSVILLE, INDIANA
<br />Lj Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the
<br />request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat for Captain William T. Schmidt to
<br />attend a meeting of the Indiana Firefighters Association at Evansville,
<br />Indiana, January 19 and 20, 1970.
<br />APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT AS SPECIAL POLICE OFFICERS
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the
<br />application of Robert C. Koloszar for appointment,as a special police
<br />officer for the South Bend Toy Manufacturing Company.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the application of Wayne
<br />Gerald Diffendorfer for appointment as a special police officerin his duties
<br />as a civilian police armorer for the City of South Bend was referred to the
<br />Legal Department, in connection with its study concerning special police
<br />officers, for review and recommendation to the Board,
<br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION
<br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the
<br />following matters were taken up:
<br />1144 S. Main Street. Mr. Adamson reported Wilfred Walz, attorney for the
<br />estate of Joseph and Pearl Culp, both deceased, owners of this property,
<br />advised there was nothing in the estate acid he is agreeable to the demolition
<br />of the property. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, per
<br />mission was granted to the Sub -Standards Director to advertise for bids for
<br />demolition of the structures at 1144 S. Main Street.
<br />145 E. Elder Street. Goldie Oberlin did not appear as requested. Mr. Adamson
<br />reported that he had received a letter from her from Fort Wayne, Indiana,
<br />where she resides, stating she is willing for the property to be demolished.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, permission was granted to
<br />the Sub -Standards Director to advertise for bids for demolition of the structure
<br />at 145 E. Elder Street.
<br />702 S. Olive Street. Mr. -Adamson reported that Stanley Kandzierski, who was
<br />requested to appear before the Board this -date, is presently in the hospital
<br />and asked a 30 day continuance of the matter, which, upon motion made,
<br />seconded and carried, was granted.
<br />412 E. Ohio Street. Neither John nor Amy Ludlow appeared as requested. Mr.
<br />Adamson stated this property has been conveyed to the city by the owners
<br />(Ludlows). Upon motion made`, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -
<br />Standards Director was granted permission to advertise for bids for demolition
<br />of the structure at 412 E. Ohio Street.
<br />730-732 South Bend Avenue. Harriet Lawson did not appear as requested. Mr.
<br />Adamson reported he has had no response to certified mail addressed to her
<br />on December 26, 1969. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried,
<br />the matter was continued one week to permit Mr. Adamson time to try to locate
<br />Mrs. Lawson.
