October 13, 1969. A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 A.M., on October 13, 1969, with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. APPOINTMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the appointment of the following men , upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, to the South Bend Fire Department effective October 14, 1969: Larry A. Gildner Jesse Ben Noell Robert E. Raker n PROMOTIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat for the following promotions in the South Bend Fire Department: C� Larry Nitka - to the rank of lieutenant, effective 10/16/69. Russell E. Beery - to the rank of lieutenant, effective 10/16/69. Q RETIREMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the , retirement of the following firemen; effective October 16, 1969:- Nicholas H. Horvath Theodore C. Koehler Mr. Horvath having been appointed September 12, 1949, and Mr. Koehler having been appointed December 16, 1947. REQUEST TO _ATTEND FIRE CHIEFS' CONVENTION, CHICAGO - JOSEPH L. ZURAT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat to attend the 96th annual conference of the International Association of Fire Chiefs in Chicago, Illinois, October 19 to 23, 1969. FIRE FIGHTER POSTER Upon motion motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat for permission to place "The Firefighter is Your Friend" posters throughout the city. PROMOTION - POLICE DEPARTMENT - RICHARD P. THOMAS Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the recommendation of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for the promotion of Richard P. Thomas to the rank of sergeant in the South Bend Police Department, effective October 16, 1969. APPLICATION - POLICE.DEPARTMENT The application of Dennis Michael Swanson for appointment to the South Bend Police Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing. RESIGNATION FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT - DOIN LARUE BASHAN Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, and upon the recommenda- tion of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert, the resignation of Doin L. Bashan from the South Bend Police Department, effective as of October 1, 1969, was accepted and approved by the Board. RETURN OF SPECIAL POLICE BADGE - GEORGE KROVITCH A communication from retired fireman George Krovitch, returning special police badge #657 issued to him 8/25/66 was ordered filed,
