<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety met at 9:30 A.M.
<br />on August 4, 1969; with all members present. The minutes of the previous'
<br />meeting were reviewed and approved.
<br />BIDS OPENED FOR SPOT LIGHT - MORRIS CIVIC AUDITORIUM
<br />This being the date set for receiving bids for a Super -Trouper Spot Light
<br />for Morris Civic Auditorium, the :Clerk tendered proofs of publication in
<br />the South Bend Tribune and the Tri County News on July 25 and August 1,
<br />1969, which were read and found to be sufficient.
<br />The only bid received was from Ge.r-Bar, Inc., 339 N.'Capitol Avenue,
<br />Indianapolis, Indiana. 'Non collusion affidavit was found to be proper and
<br />check submitted with the b'id in the amount of .$275.00 was accepted. Upon
<br />motion made, seconded and carried,..the bid, being for one ".Strong" Super-
<br />Trouper,follow spot light, in the'amount of $2675.00, was referred to
<br />Floyd M: Jessup, manager of Morris Civic Auditorium, for recommendation to
<br />the board.
<br />HEARING ON VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 3295 - SEARS ROEBUCK COMPANY
<br />Hearing on Vacation Resolution No. 3295, being for the vacation of Franklin
<br />Street, from Western Avenue south to -Monroe Street, having been continued from
<br />July 28, 1969, was resumed.
<br />Robert Wade, Manager of Sears, Roebuck & Company, appeared'.before the Board
<br />and stated that a conference with Rabbi Jacob S. Bergman, of the Congregation
<br />of the Sons of Israel Synagogue, 420.S. William Street, South Bend, resulted
<br />in an understanding regarding parking, .with permission given by Se.ars, Roebuck
<br />& Company for the use of its parking lbt by the Temple. members for so long as
<br />it caused no problems.
<br />No other persons appeared for or against the vacation.. -Upon motion madg,
<br />seconded and unanimously carried, the Resolution for the vacation of said
<br />property was adopted, and the City Engineer is directed to prepare an assess-
<br />ment roll covering the assessment of benefits and the award of damages to
<br />surrounding property owners.
<br />COMPLAINT OF HAROLD CONERY'
<br />Mr; and Mrs. Harold Conery, 1313 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, appeared
<br />before the Board. Mr. Conery complained.that since the completion of the
<br />Portage Avenue Bridge and the placing of.straw and sod along.the railroad bank
<br />that their house, their garage and their yard has been invaded by little black
<br />bugs (some of.which he exhibited in a vial) which have a vicious bite and
<br />which they cannot get rid of in spite of several sprayings by -themselves and
<br />also.by the Health.Department. The matter was taken under advisement,.and.Mr.
<br />Conery will'�furnish a written 'opinion as .to the type of insect: and what might
<br />have caused its appearance here, so that the B oard might determine responsibility,
<br />if any,<for-its extermination.
<br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION
<br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the
<br />following matters were taken up..
<br />217 N. St. Peter Street. Mr..Adamson.reported this property .is open -and exposed.
<br />Attorney'Sweeney, representing R.-Staunton, husband of one of'the heirs"of the
<br />deceased owner of this property, who resides in Buffalo, New York, stated.they
<br />are trying to sell the property and' --if it is not sold they will secure the
<br />building..... -Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the'matte-r_was
<br />continued one week.
<br />1213 Clover Street. Attorney Franklin A. Morse appeared before the Board,.
<br />representing Neuberne H. Brown. Mr. Brown is willing to have the .structure
<br />taken downi. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously,earried, permission
<br />was given to advertise for bids for demolition of the property'.
