0 July 21, 1969 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety was held at 9:30 A.M., with all members present. The -minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. REQUEST LEAVE FOR MILITARY DUTY - FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat for the following men to be excused from duty for military service: Douglas Parmley, Larry Nitka and Larry Szczepanski - from July 26 to August 9, 1969; Charles Steele and John Nelson - from August 9 to August 23, 1969. APPLICATION - FIRE DEPARTMENT Application of Ronald Frederick DeLee for appointment to the Fire Department was filed and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing. REQUEST TO TAKE POLICE CAR #74 TO FORT WAYNE The request of Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton on July 17, 1969, for permission to send Police -Car #74 to Fort Wayne Saturday, July 19, Sunday July 20 or Monday July 21, 1969, approved by the Board on July 18, 1969, is hereby confirmed and made of record. The trip is being made in respect to a police officer killed in the -line of duty. APPOINTMENT - POLICE DEPARTMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton for the appointment of William Allen Molnar to the South Bend Police Department, effective July 16, 1969. REQUEST FOR POLICE OFFICERS TO ATTEND NARCOTICS SCHOOL Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request for officers Richard P. Thomas and Jerry Szweda to attend the School on Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, sponsored by the U. S. Department of Justice, in Detroit, Michigan, July 21 through August 1, 1969, and to use Mechanical #41 for the trip. APPOINTMENT AS SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton for the appointment of George Krovitch, Jr., as a special police officer. APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT The following applications for appointment to the Police Department were filed and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing:. Harold Brett Frenger Rose Ann Glon Gerald John Rutkowski BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the following matters were taken up: 1818 W. Indiana Avenue. John Blenke, one of the owners of this property, appeared before the Board 7/14/69 instead of this date as requested. The property is being rehabilitated. 1820 S. Taylor. Mrs. Alex Zakrowski, owner of this property; appeared before the Board as requested. Mr. Adamson stated this house is closed but still is in a sub -standard condition. Mrs. Zakrowski explained that due to illness they had been unable to complete the repairs as expected. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, upon condition that the weeds are cut and the premises kept clean, an additional 120 days was granted to permit the owners to repair the property.
