135 <br />May 26, 1969 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 10:60 <br />A.M., on May 26, 1969, with all members present. The minutes of the <br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />BIDS OPENED - UNIFORMS FOR FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS <br />This being the date set for receiving bids for uniforms for the Fire Depart- <br />ment and the Police Department, the Clerk tendered proofs of publication in <br />the South Bend Tribune and the Tri County News on May 16 and May 23, 1969, <br />which were read and found to be sufficient. <br />The only bids received were from Gerber Manufacturing Company, Inc., 1655 <br />E. 12th Street, Mishawaka, Indiana. Bid bond in the amount of $10,000.00 <br />was found to be sufficient. Non collusion affidavits were found to be <br />proper. <br />No other bids having been received and the bids appearing to be reasonable, <br />upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, contract for uniforms <br />for the Fire Department and contract for uniforms for the Police Department <br />were awarded to Gerber Manufacturing Company. <br />WELCOME WAGON SIGNS <br />Upon investigation, the Board finds that the erection of Welcome Wagon signs <br />at the north and south city limits, on State Road #31, as requested by Mrs. <br />M. Maxine Zinsmeister, Welcome Wagon Hostess, 53261 Oakton Drive, South <br />Bend, Indiana, 46635, does not come under the jurisdiction of the Board, <br />and the Clerk was directed to so notify the Welcome Wagon Club. (Burns Stat. <br />47-1908, Sec. C--"No person shall place, maintain or display any advertis- <br />ing sign or device of any permanent or semi -permanent character on any high- <br />way, right of way, outside or inside the corporate limits of any incorpora- <br />ted city or town.") <br />JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SOUTH BEND - PARADE REQUEST <br />Mrs. Thomas R. Cassady, 1609 DeVon Circle, South Bend, Indiana, appeared be- <br />fore the Board in reference to the request previously made to hold a parade. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board granted per- <br />mission for the Junior League of South Bend to hold a parade -at 2:00 P.M., <br />on June 14, 1969, and permission for a police escort, the parade starting <br />at Gates Chevrolet Company on Western Avenue, proceeding on Western east <br />to Michigan, north on Michigan to Marion, west on Marion to Main, and <br />south on Main to Western, to the place of beginning, on the condition that <br />evidence of proper insurance to hold the city harmless is provided to the <br />Board. <br />REQUEST OF FRANK J. BALLATORE FOR LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />After having considered the request of fireman Frank J. Ballatore for a <br />leave of absence from the Fire Department for one year, upon motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved such request on the <br />condition that fireman Ballatore return to the Department only at a time <br />when an opening is available. <br />APPLICATIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />The application of Willie Earl Lott for appointment to the Fire Department <br />was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further <br />processing. <br />APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the Police Department were <br />filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further <br />processing: <br />Robert Frederic Couch <br />Michael Charles Ward <br />
