April 5, 1971. A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 A.M. on April 5, 1971, with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION The application of John Franklin Galasso for appointment to the South Bend Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing. _. FIRE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND CONFERENCE J N PORTLAND, OREGON_ Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request for Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat and Assistant Chief William Diedrich to attend the International Association of Arson Investigators Conference in Portland, Oregon, April 25 to April 30, 1971. FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - JOHN E. FUTA The application of John E. Futa for retirement from the South Bend Fire Department was accepted by the Board and upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried the retirement was approved effective as of April 1, 1971, upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat. POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO HIRE SENIOR PROGRAMMER Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the request of Captain Knepper for permission to hire a senior programmer was referred to Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert and Board President Lloyd S. Taylor, for study and recommendation. POLICE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - ROBERT B. BEJMA The declaration of Robert B. Bejma for retirement from the South Bend Polcice Department was accepted by the Board and, upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert, such retirement was approved effective April 18, 1971. The Board commended Sergeant Bejma for his work in the Police Depart- ment and the City Attorney further commended him for his excellent work with the Legal Department. POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND JUVENILE AID SCHOOL Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for officer Arletta Taylor of the Juvenile Aid Bureau to attend a one week school at Michigan State University on Juvenile delinquency, May 3 to May 7, 1971. POLICE DEPARTMENT - GRANT APPLICATION Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the application of the Police Department for a Federal grant for the training and expansion of school liason officers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the following matters were taken up. 622. Euclid Avenue. Clarence Walters, 622 Euclid Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, owner, appeared before the Board as requested to answer regarding trash and debris on the premises. Mr. Walters stated he has been ill] but will get the premises cleaned up as soon as possible. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter was continued one week for the owner to clean up the premises. 737-739 W. Indiana Avenue. Mr. Liszewski reports this property in the same condition as March 8, 1971, when Joseph L. Wiley, son of the owner, promised to demolish the property.
