April 5, 1971. <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M. on April 5, 1971, with all members present. The minutes of the <br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION <br />The application of John Franklin Galasso for appointment to the South Bend <br />Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel <br />Director for further processing. _. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND CONFERENCE J N PORTLAND, OREGON_ <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved <br />the request for Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat and Assistant Chief William <br />Diedrich to attend the International Association of Arson Investigators <br />Conference in Portland, Oregon, April 25 to April 30, 1971. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - JOHN E. FUTA <br />The application of John E. Futa for retirement from the South Bend Fire <br />Department was accepted by the Board and upon motion made, seconded and <br />unanimously carried the retirement was approved effective as of April 1, 1971, <br />upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO HIRE SENIOR PROGRAMMER <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the request of Captain Knepper <br />for permission to hire a senior programmer was referred to Chief of Police <br />Loren M. Bussert and Board President Lloyd S. Taylor, for study and <br />recommendation. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - ROBERT B. BEJMA <br />The declaration of Robert B. Bejma for retirement from the South Bend Polcice <br />Department was accepted by the Board and, upon the recommendation of Chief <br />of Police Loren M. Bussert, such retirement was approved effective April 18, <br />1971. The Board commended Sergeant Bejma for his work in the Police Depart- <br />ment and the City Attorney further commended him for his excellent work with <br />the Legal Department. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND JUVENILE AID SCHOOL <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for officer Arletta Taylor of <br />the Juvenile Aid Bureau to attend a one week school at Michigan State <br />University on Juvenile delinquency, May 3 to May 7, 1971. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - GRANT APPLICATION <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />application of the Police Department for a Federal grant for the training <br />and expansion of school liason officers. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and <br />the following matters were taken up. <br />622. Euclid Avenue. Clarence Walters, 622 Euclid Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, <br />owner, appeared before the Board as requested to answer regarding trash and <br />debris on the premises. Mr. Walters stated he has been ill] but will get <br />the premises cleaned up as soon as possible. Upon motion made, seconded and <br />carried, the matter was continued one week for the owner to clean up the <br />premises. <br />737-739 W. Indiana Avenue. Mr. Liszewski reports this property in the same <br />condition as March 8, 1971, when Joseph L. Wiley, son of the owner, promised <br />to demolish the property. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter <br />was continued one.week, and the Sub -Standards Director was directed to <br />
