March-1, 1971 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M., on March 1, 1971, with Lloyd S. Taylor, City Engineer, and S. J. <br />Crumpacker, City Attorney, present. The minutes of the previous meeting <br />were reviewed and approved. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND EASTMAN.KODAK PROGRAM, OAK BROOK, ILLINOIS <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of <br />Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for Sergeant Robert Riddle and Sergeant <br />George Hertz to attend a law enforcement program by the Eastman Kodak Company, <br />Oak Brook, Illinois March 2, 1971,.and on March 4, 1971, the program on <br />photographic lab techniques; and to use a Department vehicle for transportation. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND PISTOL MATCHES, TAMPA, FLORIDA <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of <br />Chief of Police.Loren M. Bussert for Division Chief Kenneth McDonald to attend <br />the annual National Mid -Winter Pistol Matches in Tampa, Florida March 8 <br />through March 18, 1971, along with members of the South Bend Police Pistol <br />Team as follows: Captain Richard Albright, Sergeant Keith Zeider, Sergeant <br />Florian Szuba, Patrolman James Grummell and Patrolman Frank Mattel, and to <br />use mechanical vehicle #2-A for transportation. The expense of the trip will <br />be paid by the Pistol Team. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT COURSE, CHICAGO, ILL. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of <br />Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for Sergeant Joseph Radecki and Patrolman. <br />Larry Blume, of the Traffic Police Department, to attend a traffic institute <br />at Northwestern University March 1, 1971, and lasting three weeks. <br />POLICE FAMILIARIZATION PROGRAM REPORT <br />A report from Notre Dame law students participating in the Police familiarization <br />program of last fall wherein the students were permitted to accompany <br />police patrol officers, and the favorable evaluation of that experience, was <br />read and ordered filed. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up: <br />321 N. Brookfield. Mr. Liszewski reported the owner is willing for the building <br />to be demolished. Thereupon the motion was made, seconded and carried that <br />the Sub -Standards Department be authorized to seek bids for demolition of <br />the structure at 321 N. Brookfield. <br />223 N. Johnson Street. Mr. Liszewski reported this property has been closed. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter of 223 N. Johnson Street <br />was continued indefinitely and the Sub -Standards Department requested to keep <br />the property under surveillance. <br />325 S. Taylor. Mr. Liszewski reported this property has been posted for a long <br />time; that the Relocation Department has been notified to relocate the tenant, <br />but that the tenant is still in the premises and refuses to leave. The City <br />Attorney recommended that if all proper steps have been taken by the Sub - <br />Standards Department, the removal of the tenant to another location should be <br />accomplished so that the building can be taken down. <br />238 E. Paris. Mr. Liszewski reported this property badly damaged by fire,and <br />that the owner has given permission for its demolition. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and carried, the Sub -Standards Director was authorized to seek bids <br />for the demolition of the structure at 238 E. Paris Street. <br />134 S. Dundee Street. Mr. Liszewski reported this property is owned by the <br />d o BoarSt. Joseph County Commissioners as the result of unpaid taxes; that <br />it is unoccupied and was severely damaged by fire about a year ago. Upon <br />motion made, seconded and carried, the Sub -Standards Director was authorized <br />to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 134 S. Dundee Street. <br />
