j <br />October 5, 1970 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M., October 10, 1970, with all members present. The minutes of the <br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO TAG FIRE HYDRANTS DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK <br />Upon motion made, seconded and "unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zura't for permission to place hydrant cards <br />on fire hydrants in the downtown area during fire prevention week October 4, <br />to October 11, 1970. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board accepted and <br />approved the retirement of Alfred H. Kirsits, upon the recommendation of <br />Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, effective as of October 4, 1970, fireman Kirsits <br />having been appointed December 27, 1947 and having served over 22 years. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND NATIONAL CASH REGISTER SCHOOL <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for Sergeant James E. Robison <br />and Corporal Clement Degucz to attend two schools offered by the National <br />Cash Register Company Educational Division ("Introduction to programming" <br />Q and "Neat 3/NCR century") commencing October 12, 1970 and continuing three <br />weeks. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - FAMILIARIZATION PROGRAM W/ NOTRE DAME LAW SCHOOL <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried the Board authorized the Police <br />Department to conduct a "familiarization program" wherein Notre Dame law <br />students, for the next two semesters, will -be afforded an opportunity to <br />ride with police officers between the hours of 8:00 and 10:30 P.M. and <br />observe the operation of the Police Department for the better understand- <br />ing of the student in his pursuit of a law career. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT <br />The application of David Bradley Ferm for appointment to the South Bend <br />Police Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel <br />Director for further processing. <br />STREET DEPARTMENT: REQUEST FOR TRANSFER OF FUNDS <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of the Street Commissioner for the transfer of $6,000.00 from Account <br />MVH-11 (salaries) to Account MVH-13 (extra and overtime) and for the <br />transfer of $7,000.00 from Account MVH-11 (salaries) to Account MVH-722 <br />(motor equipment),: and referred the request to the Legal Department for the <br />preparation of ordinances for the consideration of the Common Council. <br />WEIGHTS AND MEASURES DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND MEETING <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Bert Cichowicz, City Sealer, for permission to attend a meeting <br />of the Indiana Association of Inspectors of Weights and Measures at Columbus, <br />Indiana October 14 to 16, 1970. <br />MONTHLY REPORT WE10HT'S AND MEASURES DEPARTMENT <br />The monthly report for September, 1970, of the Weights and Measures Department <br />was reviewed and ordered filed. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT'- SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up. <br />
