j October 5, 1970 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 A.M., October 10, 1970, with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. FIRE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO TAG FIRE HYDRANTS DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK Upon motion made, seconded and "unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zura't for permission to place hydrant cards on fire hydrants in the downtown area during fire prevention week October 4, to October 11, 1970. FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board accepted and approved the retirement of Alfred H. Kirsits, upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, effective as of October 4, 1970, fireman Kirsits having been appointed December 27, 1947 and having served over 22 years. POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND NATIONAL CASH REGISTER SCHOOL Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for Sergeant James E. Robison and Corporal Clement Degucz to attend two schools offered by the National Cash Register Company Educational Division ("Introduction to programming" Q and "Neat 3/NCR century") commencing October 12, 1970 and continuing three weeks. POLICE DEPARTMENT - FAMILIARIZATION PROGRAM W/ NOTRE DAME LAW SCHOOL Upon motion made, seconded and carried the Board authorized the Police Department to conduct a "familiarization program" wherein Notre Dame law students, for the next two semesters, will -be afforded an opportunity to ride with police officers between the hours of 8:00 and 10:30 P.M. and observe the operation of the Police Department for the better understand- ing of the student in his pursuit of a law career. POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT The application of David Bradley Ferm for appointment to the South Bend Police Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing. STREET DEPARTMENT: REQUEST FOR TRANSFER OF FUNDS Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of the Street Commissioner for the transfer of $6,000.00 from Account MVH-11 (salaries) to Account MVH-13 (extra and overtime) and for the transfer of $7,000.00 from Account MVH-11 (salaries) to Account MVH-722 (motor equipment),: and referred the request to the Legal Department for the preparation of ordinances for the consideration of the Common Council. WEIGHTS AND MEASURES DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND MEETING Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request of Bert Cichowicz, City Sealer, for permission to attend a meeting of the Indiana Association of Inspectors of Weights and Measures at Columbus, Indiana October 14 to 16, 1970. MONTHLY REPORT WE10HT'S AND MEASURES DEPARTMENT The monthly report for September, 1970, of the Weights and Measures Department was reviewed and ordered filed. BUILDING DEPARTMENT'- SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the following matters were taken up.
