August 24, 1970 <br />55 �. <br />1 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M. with S. J. Crumpacker, City Attorney, and James A. Bickel, City Con- <br />troller, present. Mr. Crumpacker acted as chairman of the meeting. The <br />minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />BIDS OPENED - ROCK SALT <br />This being the date set, bids for rock salt for the 1970-1971 winter season <br />were opened, the Clerk having tendered proofs of publication of notice`in <br />the South Behd Tribune and the Tri County News on August 14 and August 21, <br />1970, which were read and found to be proper. The following bids were re- <br />ceived: <br />Cargill, Inc., Suite 420, 2000 Spring Road, Oak Brook, Illinois. The bid <br />was accompanied by.a non collusion affidavit and certified check in the <br />amount of $7,670.00 which were found to be sufficient. The bid was as <br />follows: <br />Unit price-------------$11.80 <br />Total--------------$76,700.00 <br />_International Salt Company, Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, 18411. The bid <br />was accompanied by a non collusion affidavit and certified check in the <br />amount of $7,020.00 which were found to be sufficient. The bid was as <br />follows: <br />Unit price------------- $10.80 <br />Total --------------- $70,200.00 <br />Morton Salt Company, 10335 Flora Street, Detroit, Michigan, 48217. The bid <br />was accompanied by a non collusion affidavit and a bid bond in the amount of <br />$12,350.00 which were found to be sufficient. The'bid was as follows: <br />Unit price -------------- $12 00 <br />Total --------------- $78,000.00 <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the bids were referred to the Purchasing <br />Director for review and recommendation to the Board. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - JOSEPH N. NYERGES <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board accepted and approved the <br />retirement of Joseph N. Nyerges from the South Bend Fire Department effective <br />August 30, 1970. <br />APPOINTMENT - SPECIAL POLICE OFFICERS <br />The application for appointment as special police officer of Robeft Barry <br />Connell, employed by American District Telegraph Company, was approved by <br />the Board and referred to the Police Department for completion of the <br />commission. <br />The application of -James Harrison Jennings for appointment as a special <br />police officer, while in the employ of American District Telegraph Company, <br />was approved by the Board and referred to the Police Department for com- <br />pletion of the commission. <br />COMPLAINT OF MR. AND MRS. DONALD FISHER - RE SUB -STANDARD PROPERTY AT <br />132 E. ELDER STREET <br />Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fisher, 909 Riverside Drive, South Bend, Indiana, appeared <br />before the Board and complained of the actions of the Sub -Standard Department <br />in reference to property at 132 E. Elder Street owned by George Page, father of <br />Mrs. Fisher, stating that the tenants of 132 E. Elder Street had been removed <br />by the Sub -Standards Department without the owners being notified and that <br />the house had been vandalized as the result of being vacant. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the follow- <br />ing matters were taken up. <br />
