Auguvt 3, 1970 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M.,"on August 3, 1970. `Present were S. J..Crumpacker, who acted as chair- <br />man of the meeting,'and James A. Bickel. The minutes of the previous meet- <br />ing were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT <br />The application of Luther James Taylor for appointment to the South Bend <br />Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel <br />Director for further processing. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Depart- <br />ment were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for <br />further processing: <br />Robert Evan Brown <br />Jimmie Walker <br />V"q POLICE DEPARTMENT - PROMOTION <br />00 <br />6. <br />Upon motion made seconded and carried the Board approved the recommendation. <br />of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for the promotion of Corporal Paul Kozak <br />to the rank of Captain, effective August 1, 1970.. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - MILITARY DUTY <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved leave for <br />military duty at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, from July 26, 1970 through August 6, <br />1970, of officer John Brassell. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up. <br />427 N. Hill Street. Mrs. Anna Stancati, owner, and her son Guy Stancati <br />appeared before the Board. Mr. Stancati reported the building has been <br />boarded up many times but has repeatedly been broken into; that the building <br />is solid and they are going to repair it. Upon motion made, seconded and <br />carried, the matter was continued indefinitely and the Sub -Standards Director <br />was requested to keep the property under surveillance. <br />1501 S. Lebanon. Mr. Adamson reported the owner of this property has advised <br />him that she will close the structure and repair it. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and carried, the matter was continued indefinitely and the Sub - <br />standards Director was requested to keep the property under surveillance. <br />1022 S. 35th Street (on the complaint of Wm. Munich and others). Mr. <br />Adamson reported this house and the accessory building are open and that <br />old appliances and trash were found on the porch. Mr. Adamson was directed <br />to notify the owner, Patrick Meyers, to appear before the Board. <br />625 Columbia Street. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, this matter was <br />continued two weeks to permit the Sub -Standards Department more time in <br />which to relocate the occupant of this house. <br />614 Columbia Street. Mr. Adamson reported he -has had no response from Mrs. <br />Howard, land contract buyer, to a certified letter and a night letter; <br />that the house has had a fire and is wide open; that Maude Montiga is the <br />owner of the property. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Sub -Standards <br />Director was authorized to seek bids for the demolition of the structure at <br />614 South Bend Avenue. <br />3707 Belle Vista. Mr. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, reported he has been <br />unable to get in touch with the owner, G. W. Benson, who works out of town; <br />that the property, which was badly damaged by fire several months ago, was <br />partially demolished by a contractor hired by the owner but that the <br />demolition has never been completed, and the garage still stands. Upon <br />motion made, seconded and carried, the matter pertaining to 3707 Belle Vista <br />was referred to the Legal Department for appropriate action. <br />
