June 29, 1970 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M., with all members present. The minutes of the two previous meetings <br />were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT <br />The application of Thomas Walter Osowski for appointment to the South Bend <br />Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel, <br />Department for further processing. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Depart- <br />ment were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Department for <br />further processing: <br />Howard Dale Barnett <br />George Lynn Rigley <br />Robert Wegnerowski <br />r..l POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT AS SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER <br />�C7 <br />�. The application of Terry R. Wheelerfor appointment as a special police <br />officer while in the employ of the Elks•Club was approved by the Board <br />and referred to the Police Department for completion of the commission. <br />Q <br />The applications of Leon Mayo Miller and Shirley Woods for appointment as <br />special police officers for the South Bend Police Department were approved <br />by the Board and referred to the Police Department for completion of the <br />commissions. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the retirement from the <br />South Bend Police Department of officer Joseph L. Szalay affective July 15, <br />1970, was approved. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W..Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up: <br />743 N. Frances Street. Mrs. Robinson, 737 N. Frances Street, the daughter of <br />the deceased owner Etta Matthews,. appeared before the Board and stated they <br />intend to repair the building but that it is in such condition that she has <br />had it boarded up until they can obtain sufficient funds to repair it. Upon <br />moti on made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued in- <br />definitely, and the Sub=Standards Director was requested to keep the <br />property under surveillance. <br />1819 S. Ironwood. Mr. Adamson reported this house open and in bad condition <br />and that the County Commissioners are in agreement for it to be demolished. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -Standards Director <br />was authorized to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 181E S. Ironwood. <br />614 S. Columbia. Maude Matinga did not appear as requested. Mr. Adamson re- <br />ported the property has been sold to Cornelia Howell, Detroit, Michigan. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -Standards <br />Director was authorized to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 1819 <br />S. Ironwood. <br />514 E. Keasey'sStreet. Mr. Adamson reported this property cleaned up and the <br />building closed. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the <br />matter was continued indefinitely, and the Sub -Standards Director was re- <br />quested to keep the matter under surveillance. <br />711 Cottage Grove, Mr. Adamson reported this property closed. Upon motion <br />made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued indefinitely <br />and the Sub -Standards Director was requested to keep the property under sur- <br />veillance. <br />
