June 29, 1970 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 A.M., with all members present. The minutes of the two previous meetings were reviewed and approved. FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT The application of Thomas Walter Osowski for appointment to the South Bend Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel, Department for further processing. POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Depart- ment were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Department for further processing: Howard Dale Barnett George Lynn Rigley Robert Wegnerowski r..l POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT AS SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER �C7 �. The application of Terry R. Wheelerfor appointment as a special police officer while in the employ of the Elks•Club was approved by the Board and referred to the Police Department for completion of the commission. Q The applications of Leon Mayo Miller and Shirley Woods for appointment as special police officers for the South Bend Police Department were approved by the Board and referred to the Police Department for completion of the commissions. POLICE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the retirement from the South Bend Police Department of officer Joseph L. Szalay affective July 15, 1970, was approved. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION J. W..Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the following matters were taken up: 743 N. Frances Street. Mrs. Robinson, 737 N. Frances Street, the daughter of the deceased owner Etta Matthews,. appeared before the Board and stated they intend to repair the building but that it is in such condition that she has had it boarded up until they can obtain sufficient funds to repair it. Upon moti on made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued in- definitely, and the Sub=Standards Director was requested to keep the property under surveillance. 1819 S. Ironwood. Mr. Adamson reported this house open and in bad condition and that the County Commissioners are in agreement for it to be demolished. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -Standards Director was authorized to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 181E S. Ironwood. 614 S. Columbia. Maude Matinga did not appear as requested. Mr. Adamson re- ported the property has been sold to Cornelia Howell, Detroit, Michigan. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -Standards Director was authorized to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 1819 S. Ironwood. 514 E. Keasey'sStreet. Mr. Adamson reported this property cleaned up and the building closed. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued indefinitely, and the Sub -Standards Director was re- quested to keep the matter under surveillance. 711 Cottage Grove, Mr. Adamson reported this property closed. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued indefinitely and the Sub -Standards Director was requested to keep the property under sur- veillance.
