May 25, 1970. <br />a9. <br />1 <br />1 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at.9:30 <br />A.M., on May 25, 1970, with all members present. The minutes of the <br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />APPOINTMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />appointment of the following applicants to the South Bend Fire Department, <br />upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, effective May 25, <br />1970: <br />Larry Buchanan Robert X. Quinn III <br />James M. Dembinski Richard Switalski <br />Timothy I. Paczkowski <br />REQUEST TO ATTEND FIRE FIGHTERS CONVENTION, HAMMOND, INDIANX' <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request -for two firemen to attend the Indiana State Association of Fire <br />Fighters Convention in Hammond, Indiana, June 3 and 4, 1970. <br />APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Department <br />were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further <br />processing: <br />Scott Bradfield Clark <br />John Robert Hawley <br />Orlando Woods <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up. <br />1022 S. Franklin Street. Ruth Jones Lewis, 1113 S. Lafayette Street, South <br />Bend, Indiana, appeared before the Board as requested. Mrs. Lewis stated <br />she had given.a demolition contractor $100.00 a year ago to demolish.this <br />property but that he has never done so; that she has now obtained another <br />contractor and will have the building taken down herself. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued five weeks to <br />permit the owner to demolish the structure'. <br />1237 Van Buren Street. Attorney Paul Schwertley appeared before the Board and <br />stated that the owners of this property are separated; that Mr. Strouss says <br />he will spend nothing more on the property and that Mrs. Strouss has no money <br />to spend on it. Mr. Adamson reported the house wide open and vandalized. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried the matter was continued one week <br />for disposition by the owners. <br />1. <br />1033 Hudson. Mrs. Norma Swank Reuter, owner of the property, appeared be- <br />fore -the Board as requested, and stated she has boarded up the house many times <br />but it has been torn'off by vandals; that she intends to rehabilitate the <br />pr9per4jy_A9d hhasa� contractor to.do the work. Upon motion made, seconded and <br />unanimou-say ca i-t!d., the matter pertaining to 1033 Hudson Street was continued <br />one week to permit the -owner time -to close up the property. Mrs. Nellie <br />Swartz, 1207 Riverside, South Bend, Indiana, also appeared as an interested <br />party in reference to this property. <br />717 S. Arnold. Francis E. Doseman did not appear as requested. Mr. Adamson <br />reported Mr. Dozeman does not intend to rehabilitate the property. Upon <br />motion made, seconded and carried, the matter was continued one week. <br />1613 S. Leer. Mrs. Lottie King did not appear as requested. Upon motion <br />made, seconded and carried, the matter was continued four weeks for the <br />Building Department to try to rectify the situation with the owner. <br />1320 Hine. Mr. Adamson reported this building is open. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and carried, the matter was continued one week for the owner to <br />appear before the Board, <br />
