1 <br />1 <br />May 11, 1970 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M., with all members present. . <br />REQUEST TO BE EXCUSED FOR MILITARY DUTY - POLICE OFFICER JAMES E. ROBISON <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried,- the Board approved the <br />request of Sgt. James E. Robertson to be excused July 10 through July 24, <br />1970, for military duty at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, with the approval of <br />Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert. <br />REQUEST TO ATTEND CONFERENCEIN MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA - BUILDING COMMISSIONER <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Forrest R. West, Building Commissioner, to attend the 55th annual <br />conference of the Building Officials Conference of America at Miami Beach, <br />Florida, May 16 through May 22, 1970. <br />WEIGHTS & MEASURES - REPORT FOR APRIL, 1970 <br />Monthly report for April 1970, of the Weights and Measures Department was <br />reviewed and ordered filed. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up: <br />712-714 E. Washington Avenue. Mr. Adamson reported this house has been <br />posted as unfit for human habitation and is under surveillance of the Sub - <br />Standards Department. <br />Five residents of ,the neighborhood appeared before the Board to protest the <br />condition of the property and filed a complaint bearing the signatures of <br />Vincent G. Vairo, 711 E. Washington Street, South Bend, Indiana, and 43 <br />others. <br />510 E. Wenger. Attorney Don Patrick appeared before the Board on behalf of <br />Jack and Charles Hurwich and stated the property has been vacant since March, <br />1970 and the owners are willing for it to be'demolished. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously carried, the -Sub -Standards Director was authorized <br />to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 510 E. Wenger Street. <br />661 LaPorte Avenue. Donald Clements appeared before. the Board. Mr. Adamson <br />reported Mr. Clements is merely painting over rotten boards and that he has <br />ordered the work stopped. Before further action is taken, the Board will <br />view the premises. <br />1825 Benton Court. Neither George nor Mary Visocky appeared as requested. <br />Mr. Adamson exhibited a letter to the Board from Mr. and Mrs. Visocky in <br />which they agreed "to permit the City to accept bids for demolition of the <br />property" and "if the bids received are higher than the ones we have received, <br />we reserve the right to choose the lower bid." Mr. Adamson reported he had <br />advised the owners concerning the $25.00 to be paid to the tow bidder in the <br />event the City obtains bids but the owner has the property demolished. <br />2202 E. Pleasant Street. Dewey Covell, Jr., 1210 S. Ironwood, and Mr. Poulos, <br />104 E. Broadway, South Bend, Indiana, appeared before the Board. Mr. Covell <br />stated they both want to tear the structure down; that Mr. Poulis has equip- <br />ment in the building and is trying to relocate it; that the building has <br />been secured and they will clean up the trash and debris on the exterior of <br />the building. Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter <br />pertaining to 2202 E. Pleadant Street was continued four weeks on condition <br />that the property owner clean up the debris on the exterior of the.building. <br />721 W. Wayne Street. Neither Anthony nor Colette Rowland appeared as requested. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued <br />one week for time to hear from the owners. <br />
