July 3, 1972 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety was convened <br />at 9:30 A. M. on Monday, July 3, 1972. Present were Mr. James V. <br />Barcome and Mr. William J. Richardson, members. Mr. Richardson presided <br />in the absence of Mr. Charles A. Sweeney, Jr. Minutes of the last <br />meeting were read and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief Bland was present and matters pertaining to his department were <br />discussed. <br />The Chief presented specifications for Fire Department Vehicles, and <br />requested that bids be obtained for three vehicles. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and carried, the Board instructed the Clerk to advertise for <br />bids for the Fire Department Pumpers, bids to be returnable on July <br />17,.1972. <br />BIDS FOR UNIFORMS AND UNIFORM EQUIPMENT <br />Chief Bland informed the hoard that he would like to have bids re- <br />ceived for Uniforms and Uniform E gjipment for the Fire Department. <br />The Board instructed the Clerk to advertise for bids to be return- <br />able on July 17th. <br />RETIREMENT OF ANDREW A. VARGYAS <br />The following letter was presented by the Chief: <br />June 30, 1972 <br />Board of Public Works and Safety <br />13th Floor County City Building <br />South Bend, Indiana 46601 <br />Re: Firefighter Andrew A. Vargyas <br />Honorable Board Members: <br />Attached hereto please find the Application and Declaration for Retire- <br />ment of the above named firefighter. He wishes to make his retirment <br />retroactive to July 1, 1972. <br />Firefighter Vargyas has completed thirty-five (35) years of service <br />on the South Bend Fire Department. He was appointed on August 15, 1936, and <br />was born on November 28, 1912. <br />1 recommend that his retirement be granted, which I trust will meet with <br />your approval. <br />Respectfully yours, <br />s/ Jack R.
