321
May 30, 1972
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety was convened on
Tuesday, May 30, 1972 at 9:30 A.M. Present,were James U. Barcome and
William J. Richardson. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and
read.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Chief Bland appeared before the Board and matters pertaining to his De-
partment were discussed.
FIREFIGHTER CAPTAIN BUCZKOWSKI DEMOTED
The Chief presented the following letter:
May 30, 1972
Board of Public Works and Safety
13th Floor, County City Building
South Bend, Indiana
Re: Captain Frank Buczkowski
tJ Honorable Members of the Board:
During a recent response of the South Bend Fire Department to the AM
General Corporation on Saturday, May 20, 1972, Captain Frank Buczkowski
of the South Bend Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau conducted him-
self in such a manner as to warrant disciplinary action. Subsequent to
this incident, Captain Buczkowski was suspended for three (3) days until
an j nvest'igation could be made into this matter.
As a result of the investigation, 1 must conclude that the allegations
and charges as set out in a letter from the AM General Corporation, and
also witnessed by several firefighters and the Assistant Chief in charge
of the operation,' lead me to conclude that Captain Frank Buczkowski did,
in fact, respond and act in an improper manner and is guilty of conduct
unbecoming a South Bend Fire Department officer. i am, therefore, recom-
mending that Captain Frank Buczkowski be reduced in rank to that of
Lieutanant.
Respectfully yours,
SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT
s/ Jack R. Bland, Fire Chief
JRB/ss
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board accepted the recommend-
ation of the Chief and demoted Captain Frank Buczkowski to the rank of
Lieutenant in the South Bend Fire Department.
RETIREMENT OF FIREFIGHTER MODEST J.
