May 22, 1972 <br />1 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened on <br />Monday, May 22, 1972 at 9:30 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of <br />the last meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief Bland was present and matters pertaining to his department were <br />discussed. <br />Applications for the South Bend Fire Department were approved for: <br />Terance A. Goralski James P. Bergen <br />And ordered send to the Personnel Department <br />PARADE PARTICIPATION AND USE OF EQUIPMENT <br />The following letter was presented: <br />Board of Public Works and Safety <br />13th Floor County city Building <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />Re: Parade Participation <br />Honorable members of the Board: <br />John Thomas Dembinski <br />May 22, 1972 <br />We have been requested recently by several different organizations asking <br />that fire equipment and apparatus be used in the leading of various par- <br />ades in the community. <br />I feel that under the present conditions that any parades involving South <br />Bend Fire Department equipment should be limited to those holidays or <br />parades that are national in scope and that we refuse requests from neigh- <br />borhood organizations, etc. <br />Your consideration and recommendation in this matter will be appreciated. <br />JRB/ss <br />Very truly yours, <br />SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />s/ Jack R. Bland, Fire Chief <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board concurred in <br />Chief Bland's recommendation and approved denying requests for fire apparatus <br />to lead neighborhood parades. <br />FIREFIGHTER DAVID DAREN - REQUEST FOR LEAVE OF ABSENCE DENIED: <br />e toiiowing letter was presented by cniet bian <br />"ay 22, 1972 <br />Board of Public Works and Safety <br />13th Floor County City Building <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />Re: Firefighter David Daren <br />Honorable Members of the Board: <br />have been requested by the above named firefighter to grant iny.permission <br />and secure your approval for a leave of absence, effective upon completion <br />of his vacation, namely: May 27, 1972. Firefighter Daren has concluded his <br />degree work at Indiana University this year and would like to try another job <br />field. I think:'ah#s would be inconsistant with the intent and purposes of <br />normal or emergency leave granting. <br />
