1276 <br />April 24, 1972 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at <br />9:30 A.M. on Monday, April 24, 1972, with all members present The <br />minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. <br />SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Police -Chief Robert W, Seals was present at the meeting and the follow- <br />ing matters were taken up: <br />Retirement of Rene L. DeVolder <br />Upon motion made,•seconded and unanimously carried, the recommendation <br />of Chief Seals to accept the retirement of Rene L. DeVolder from the <br />South Bend Police Department was approved. DeVolder was appointed <br />to the Department on March 1, 1949. His retirement will be effective <br />as of April 30, 1972. <br />Request for Military Leave - Officer Larry J. Verash <br />Chief Seals' request that Officer Larry J. Verash be granted a military <br />leave of absence from the South Bend Police Department to attend annual <br />Marine Corps Reserve Training, June 17 to July 2, 1972, was approved up- <br />on motion made, seconded and carried. <br />Request for Police Escort for Blossomtime Festival Parade <br />Chief Seals submits his request to allow three or four Police motor- <br />cycles to participate as escorts in the Blossomtime Festival Parade <br />on May 5, 1972 and the Grand Floral Parade on May 6, 1972. Upon motion <br />made, seconded and carried this request was granted by the Board. <br />SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Chief Jack R. Bland was present at the meeting and the following matters <br />were taken up for the Fire Department: <br />Request to Reinstate Firefighter Robert Snider <br />Firefighter Robert Snider having been on extended sick leave since <br />December 8, 1972, and his physician now seeing him fit to return to <br />duty, Chief Bland requests to reinstate Firefighter Snider to duty. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, said request was approved by <br />the Board. <br />Request for Extended Sick Leave - Lt. Joseph L. Zurat <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved Chief Bland's <br />request that Lt. Joseph L. Zurat be granted an extended sick leave to <br />recuperate from recent surgery. Said sick leave will extend to May 1, <br />1972. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />Richard B. Liszewski, Director of the Sub -Standards Division, appeared <br />before the Board and the following matters were taken up: <br />724 George Avenue <br />Contract for the demolition of this property was awarded to Vanek Ex- <br />cavating Company on January 3, 1972. Mr. Liszewski produced evidence <br />to the Board that the structure has been torn down but the salvage and <br />debris from the demolition have not been cleaned up, causing a hazard <br />in the area. Mr. Liszewski also advised the Board that Vanek Excava- <br />ting Company has not been paid for the work. Upon motion made, second- <br />ed and carried, the Sub -Standards Division was authorized to advertise <br />for bids for the clean-up of this site. <br />
