The ambulance crew, as presently structured,
tends to strain the individual crew members to a point where we feel that
their efficiency may be impaired. We feel that the type of work these men
do in the line of duty merits an opportunity of the 56-hour work week as
soon as possible. We recommend a starting date of March 1, 1972. We
anticipate a general move to a 56-hour work week for the entire Fire Depart-
ment for January 1, 1973, for the same basic reasons. We have the necessary
personnel to enforce this system so no additional hiring would be required.
I respectfully hope that you would be able to give this benefit to members
of the ambulance crew for the reasons set out above.
Thank you. Very truly yours,
SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT
JRB/ss s/ Jack R. Bland, Fire Chief
