<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30
<br />A.M. on November 8, 1971, with all members present. The minutes of the
<br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved.
<br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND COMPUTER MEETING, HOUSTON, TEXAS
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, Captain G. J. Knepper
<br />was authorized to attend a meeting at the Automated Systems Corporation
<br />in Houston, Texas, for computer instruction November 16 to 18, 1971, and
<br />approved the use of a rental car in Houston.
<br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND GRADUATION EXERCISES - LOUISVILLE,
<br />KENTUCKY
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, -upon the recommendation
<br />of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert, the Board approved the attendance of
<br />Sergeants Michael Borkowski and Gerschoffer at the graduation of Sergeant
<br />William Adelsperger from the Southern Police Institute at Louisville,
<br />s-4 Kentucky on November 12, 1971, and approved travel expense be paid by the
<br />to City.
<br />sJ POLICE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT - SYLVESTER RALPH McGEE
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried the°Board accepted and
<br />approved the retirement of Detective Sergeant Sylvester R. McGee from the
<br />Police Department effective November 15, 1971, Sergeant McGee having com-
<br />pleted over 20 years of service in the Department, with a commendable
<br />record.
<br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION
<br />Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the
<br />following matters were taken up.
<br />1257 Woodward Avenue. Mrs. Howard Nivens, 1253 Woodward, South Bend, Indiana,
<br />appeared before the Board and complained of the condition of the garage at
<br />1257 Woodward Avenue. Mr. Liszewski stated the matter is having the
<br />attention of the Sub -Standards Department and they are trying to get the
<br />debris removed.
<br />1033 Hudson Street. Mrs. Robert E. Prue, 1236 Woodward, South Bend, Indiana,
<br />and Mrs. Fred Goerke, 1201'Riverside Drive, South Bend, Indiana, appeared
<br />before the Board in reference to the condition of the property at 1033
<br />Hudson Street. Mr. Liszewski reported perhaps 50% of the repairs to the
<br />property have been completed. Mrs. Goerke stated there would,be no objection
<br />to the property if it is repaired within a reasonable time.
<br />This being the date set for receiving bids for demolition of the structure,
<br />it was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the bids be opened but
<br />that the award of any contract be held in abeyance four weeks. The Sub -
<br />Standards Director was requested to keep the property under surveillance and
<br />report to the Board in four weeks.
<br />Thereupon the following bids were opened. Non collusion affidavits were
<br />found to be proper. The bids were as follows:
<br />O'Neal Trucking Company $600.00
<br />Machinery Supply Company $526:00
<br />2116 Western Avenue. Mr. Ralph Muszynski, 2124 Western Avenue, South Bend,
<br />Indiana, appeared before the Board and complained of the condition and appear-
<br />ance of the building at 2116 Western Avenue, stating that the last occupant
<br />was about six years ago and that since that time the building has been
<br />periodically secured and broken into, is in bad condition now and something
<br />should be done. Mr. Liszewski reported the building has a long sub -standard
<br />history and its condition has gotten progeessively worse. Upon motion
<br />made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Sub -Standards Director was
<br />authorized to seek bids for demolition of the structure at 2116 Western
<br />Avenue.
