August 16, 1971. <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M. on August 16, 1971, with Lloyd S. Taylor, City Engineer, and James A. <br />Bickel, City Controller, present. The minutes of the previous meeting were <br />reviewed and approved., <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND FIRE CHIEFS' ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the request of Fire <br />Chief Joseph L. Zurat for permission to attend the Indiana Fire Chiefs' <br />Association Conference in Evansville, Indiana August 25, 26 and 27, 1971, <br />was approved. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - STATISTICAL REPORT <br />Police Department statistical report for July, 1971, was reviewed and <br />ordered f i led. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and <br />the following matters were to -ken up: <br />229-245 de la Paix (Park Jefferson Apartments). M. Dayne Bonta and attorney <br />David L. Kiley, First National Bank Building, Marion, Indiana, appeared be- <br />fore the Board. Mr. Kiley explained that because of a controversy with their <br />insurance carrier and a pending court action as the result of a fire on March <br />8, 1971, the owner has as yet been unable to repair or rebuild the apartment <br />complex at 229-245 de la Paix; that they have closed the structure and are <br />willing to erect a fence around the area until such time as they can repair <br />or rebuild the structure. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter <br />was continued four weeks. <br />122 S. Laurel Street. Joe Wein, 3015 Western Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, <br />appeared before the Board on behalf of the owner, his brother-in-law, Joseph <br />Kahalnick. Mr. Wein stated the property is presently vacant and that they <br />will cut the weeds and clean up the premises. Upon motion made, seconded <br />and carried, the matter of 122 S. Laurel Street was continued eight weeks, <br />subject to the weeds being cut and the debris removed from the yard within <br />one week, and the premises being secured. <br />236 Indiana Avenue. Goldus Butler did not appear as requested. Upon motion <br />made, seconded and carried, the Sub -Standards Director was authorized to <br />seek bids for demolition of the accessory building at 236 Indiana Avenue. <br />134 N. Birdsell Street. Odie B. Merriweather did not appear as requested. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter of 134 N. Birdsell Street <br />was continued one week. <br />1314 W. Jefferson Boulevard. Minerva Barnes did not appear as requested. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter of 1314 W. Jefferson -Boulevard <br />was continued one week. <br />Demolition bids opened: <br />This being the date set, bids for demolition of the following structures <br />were opened. Non collusion affidavits were found to be sufficient. The bids <br />were as follows: <br />1211 S. Lafayette: <br />Midwest Demolition Company $467.00 <br />B & J Demolition Company $535.00 <br />O'Neal Trucking Company $700.00 <br />Bryant Excavating Company $530.00 <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, contract for demolition <br />of the structure at 1211 S.
