DECKER - RE: FIRE AT M.S.F.
The following letter was presented to the Board:
June 15, 1973
Board of Public Works
County City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Re: Fire At M.S.F. resulting in the loss of a Fuel Tanker
Truck and a Mechanical Street Sweeper
Gentlemen:
On Monday, June 11, 1973 at 3:07 p.m. at the rear of the Municipal Services
Facility, 701 W. Sample a fire destroyed a 1973 Elgin Pelican Street Sweeper, No
131, and a 1956 International Fuel Tanker Truck, No. 135. The value of the
Street Sweeper was $22,550.00 and the Fuel Tanker Truck was valued at $700.00.
Both vehicles were insured with the Aetna Insurance Company and are considered
a total loss.
The circumstances resulting in the accident were as follows: The fuel Tanker
Truck has been the source of fuel oil from which all diesel engine equipment
obtained their fuel.. In order to fuel a vehicle it is necessary to start the
Tanker Truck to activate the pump and then proceed to fuel the vehicle. One
vehicle had just refueled and pulled away and Mr. Hopkins positioned Sweeper
#131 behind Fuel Truck #135 for refueling. The Tanker Truck was still running
so Mr. Hopkins proceeded to fuel his sweeper. After refueling his sweeper he
then got into the Tanker Truck to shut it off at which time the Tanker Truck
backfired apparently igniting a fire beneath it.
At that time some witnesses near the Sign Shop hollered to Mr. Hopkins that
the truck was on -fire. He got out of the truck and observed the fire rapidly
spreading beneath the tanker and ran to turn in the alarm.
When the Fire Department arrived, both vehicles were engulfed in flames result-
ing in the loss of both the Street Sweeper and the Tanker Truck.
Respectfully yours,
s/ Donald L. Decker
Street Commissioner
Mr. Decker was present and he stated that he is working with the insurance
Company and Elgin Company for the salvage value of the sweeper. He said
M.S.F. will eliminate truck fueling and will install underground storage
tanks. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board ordered the letter
filed.
REQUEST THAT CITY STOCK PILE PAVING BRICKS
Mrs. Sharp, Portage Park Committee, was present at the meeting. She requested
that the City stock pile all paving bricks whenever they become available to
be used along the river bank. Mr. Decker, Street Commissioner, was present
and he replied to Mrs; Sharp that he has very few on hand, but they do try to
save what little they have.
