2i31 <br />REGULAR MEETING APRIL 30, 1973 <br />1 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works convened at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, <br />April 30, 1973, with all members present. Minutes of the previous meeting were <br />reviewed and approved. <br />BIDS - KENSINGTON FARM SEWERS <br />Bids for the Kensington Farm sewer project were opened and publicly read, the <br />Clerk having tendered proofs of publication of notice in the South Bend Tribune <br />and the Tri-County News which were found to be sufficient. <br />Howell Construction Company <br />III E. Windsor Street <br />Elkhart, Indiana <br />Total Amount of Bid - $129,156.75 <br />Dye Plumbing & Heating Company <br />712 Madison Street <br />LaPorte, Indiana , <br />Total Amount of Bid - $161,858.80 <br />Bid was signed by Ronald Howell, <br />non -collusion affidavit was in <br />order and a 5% bid bond accompanied <br />the bid. <br />Bid was not signed, non -collusion <br />affidavit was in order, and a 5% <br />bid bond accompanied the bid, <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the bids were referred to the Division <br />of Engineering for investigation and report. <br />PAINTING OF FIRE HYDRANTS <br />Mr. Charles A. Lennon, Jr., Director of the Department of Redevelopment, appeared <br />before the Board on behalf of the Mayor's Bi-Centennial Committee requesting <br />Board approval for the design and painting of 300 fire hydrants in the City. <br />Mrs. Ruth VonKarowsky and Mrs. Grace Devetski were in attendance and presented <br />to the Board sketches and blueprints of the 25 designs they have prepared and <br />the color schemes to be used in the painting. They requested Board approval of <br />the designs and colors to be used. They also asked that wooden horses be provided <br />to protect the artists as they paint. The Board asked Mr. James Roemer, City <br />Attorney, if there were any legal problems involved in giving approval for this <br />project. Mr. Roemer said that the°;City might want to ask for a waiver as protection <br />for the City in case of accident. He then suggested that the Board approve the <br />painting of the fire hydrants according to the designs submitted, subject to the <br />City Attorney investigating the possibility of asking for a waiver to be signed <br />to relieve the City of liability, so moved, seconded and carried. Mrs. Von Karowsky. <br />was referred to Mr. Clem Hazinski to arrange for the wooden horses. <br />REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS FOR TEN POLICE VEHICLES <br />The Board received a request from Police Chief Robert Urban asking for permission <br />to advertise for bids for ten police vehicles. Upon motion made, seconded and <br />carried, the Board approved the request and directed the Clerk to advertise for <br />bids on the 4th and llth of May with bids to be received on May 14, 1973. <br />AWARDING OF BID - FIRE DEPARTMENT AMBULANCES <br />The Board received a letter from Fire Chief Jack R. Bland recommending that the <br />bid of the Butler Coach Company, Inc., of $23,986.00 for two ambulances, be <br />accepted. The Butler Coach Company meets all the specifications and is the low <br />bidder. Upon motion made, seconded and carried,the Board accepted Chief Bland's <br />recommendation and awarded the bid to the Butler Coach Company. <br />EAGLE SCOUT WILLIAM MEEK IN ATTENDANCE <br />Mr. Richardson introduced William Meek, an Eagle Scout, who is a junior at <br />Adams High School. Today is Eagle Scout Day and Mr. Meek, who hopes to become a <br />Civil Engineer, will spend the day with Mr. Richardson. <br />
