REGULAR MEETING APRIL 9, 1973 The assessment rate of $5.30 per front foot is the maximum rate which could be assessed since it was the rate quoted in the preliminary estimate and given at the public hearings. In addition, at the public hearing before the Common Council, the City agreed to pay 25%.df :the project cost. The City share as shown above would fulfill that requirement, although the assessment rate would not be reduced. Of the estimated engineering cost it should be noted that $1,584.83 has been paid. If the project is not con- structed, the estimated engineering cost will be $2,750.00, including that already paid. Although the Board could reject all bids and advertise for new proposals it is our opinion that the two contractors which submitted proposals April 2, 1973 would not decrease their prices. Because of the difference between the two bids -it is possible that the -tow bid would be increased. Although some other contractor might submit a proposal for a second opening it is not expected that such a bid would be significantly lower than those which have been received and published. It is,therefore, our recommendation that a contract be awarded to McIntyre & Jones Construction Co., Inc., on the basis of their low bid of $18,947.50. Vary truly yours, s/ Gerald R. REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS - FIRE DEPARTMENT The Board received the following letter: April 6, 1973 Board of Public Works 13th Floor, County -City Building South Bend, Indiana 46601 Honorable Members of the Board: The two (2) in-service ambulances of the South Bend Bureau of Fire are badly in need of replacement under our normal replacement -schedules. Neither of them meets with the expanded needs and requirements that we must meet for emergency care of the sick and injured. Enclosed are the specifications drawn that we feel meet our requirements. We are requesting permission to advertise for the purchase of two (2) ambulances under the enclosed specifications. Your immediate attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully submitted, SOUTH BEND BUREAU OF FIRE s/ Jack R. Bland Fire Chief Mr. Barcome explained that it had been thought that the Federal Government would pay for half the cost of the new ambulances. They have investigated this possibility and it now appears that this funding will not be available. The Department is in dire need of new ambulances. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the Chief's request and directed the Clerk to advertise for bids on April 13th and 20th, with bids to be received on April 23, 1973.
