REGULAR MEETING
MARCH 26, 1973
Since I consider the immediate installation of some type of "high
curb" barrier a matter of public safety, I am notifying the Board of
Public Safety of the hazardous Angela hilly curve by way of this letter.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
s/ Roger 0. Parent
Mr. Richardson said that there is no doubt that the Angela Hill curve needs to
be straightened but the problem is to find the funding. Upon motion made,
seconded and carried, the Board referred the matter to Mr. David Wells, Bureau
of Administration and Design, for study and the preparation of a cost estimate.
REQUEST TO HOLD WHITE CANE SALE
The Board received a request from the Blind and Sighted Workers of St. Joseph
County to hold their annual White Cane Sale from April 12th to April 28th, 1973.
They have received their permit from the Charitable Solicitations Commission.
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request.
LETTER RE: PROPOSED CAR WASH, CORNER OF MIAMI AND IRELAND ROADS
The Board received a letter from Dr. Robert R. Allen concerning a vacated Shell
Station at the Corner of Miami and Ireland Roads which is being converted into
a car wash. Dr. Allen's concern was that a car wash at this location would
add to the congestion in the area and create more traffic problems. Upon motion
made, seconded and carried, the Board referred this matter to Mr. Forrest West,
Director, Bureau of Buildings and Permits, with the request that he investigate
this matter to see whether this can legally be done at that location. The Board
asked that Mr. West confer with Mr. Clem Hazinski, Manager, Bureau of Traffic
and Lighting, to see if there is anything in the traffic ordinances to prohibit
this. Mr. West is also asked to check on _a former Shell location on South
Michigan Street and other vacated Shell locations in the City to see whether
this same situation is occurring.
LETTER FROM INDIANA STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION RE: COOPER BRIDGE
The following letter was received by the Board:
March 12, 1973
Ms. Patricia DeClercq, Clerk
Board of Public Works
City of South Bend
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear Ms. DeClercq:
Further in response to your letter of February 27, 1973, concerning the
condition of the pavement on the SR 23 bridge over the St. Joseph River,
I am attaching a copy of correspondence received from Mr. Lucas, District
Engineer of the LaPorte District.
You will note that he states that this bridge is being recommended for
deck repair this summer.
Sincerely,
s/ Richard A. Boehning
Chairman
Attached to Mr. Boehning's letter was a carbon copy of a letter to him
from Mr. D.D. Mason, District Maintenance Engineer, stating that the
Cooper Bridge is scheduled for deck repairs this summer.
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the letter was ordered filed and a
letter is to be sent to the Indiana State Highway Commission expressing the
thanks of the Board for this information.
