12/4/72 APPLICATION FOR POLICE DEPARTMENT - FREDERICK JAMES STACKBARGER An application for the Police Department was received from Frederick James Stackbarger. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, this was referred to the department of Personnel. APPLICATIONS FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT Applications for the Fire Department were received from William L. Raker and Paul A. Igaz. Upon motion made, seconded and carried these were referred to the Department of Personnel. BID AWARDED ON POLICE COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT The following letter was received from John V. Hunt, Communications Supervisor of the Police Department: December 4, 1972 T94 Board of Public Works and Safety From: Radio Department Subject Bids on Police Department Radios U Gentlemen: I have studied and evaluated the respective bids from the repre- sentatives of the Motorola Communications and Electronics, Inc., and the General Electric Company which were submitted to the City of South Bend in answer to our invitation to bid on the equipment for the Police Department Communication System. Both bidders have excellent reputations as suppliers of communi- cations and equipment, and both have more than adequate parts and service facilities in this area. Nevertheless, because there is a difference of $17,000.00 between the high Motorola bid and the lower Teneral Electric bid, but certainly not merely because of this significant disparity, I must recommend that General Electric be awarded the contract at this time. I request this action now, as even a week saved at this time will be helpful to the undersigned, who must now exert most of his efforts to expedite final Federal Communications Commission license modification and Federal Aviation Administration clearance applications. I do have extensive justification prepared to justify my recommendation. Thank you, s/ John V. Hunt Comm. Sup. Chief Seals said he concurred with Mr. Hunt. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board awarded the bid for Communications Equipment to General Electric on their bid of $108,245.00 with trade ins of $6,850.00. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB STANDARD DIVISION Mr. Isaiah Steed, Director appeared before the Board and matters pertaining to his department were discussed. Mr. Harvey Bryant, owner of the Bryant Excavation Company appeared before the Board with his Attorney, Richard Anderson. He informed the Board that he did not get as much work done as he had intended because of machinery breaking down, and because of a personal in- jury to himself.
